Honeysuckle Rose
Lena Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Honey, honey,
Oh, honey, listen to my plea

Every honeybee
Fills with jealousy,
When they see you out with me
I don't blame them, goodness knows
Oh, honey suckle rose

When you're passin' by
Flowers droop and sigh
And I know the reason why
You're my sweety, goodness knows
Oh, honey suckle rose

I don't buy sugar
You just have to touch my cup
I don't need sugar
It's sweet enough when you stir it up
When I'm taking sips
From your dainty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips
You're confection, goodness knows
Oh, honey! suckle rose.

Every honeybee
Fills with jealousy
When they see you out with me
I don't blame them, goodness knows
Oh, honey suckle rose

When you're passin' by
Flowers droop and sigh
And I know the reason why
You're my sweety, goodness know
Oh, honey suckle rose

I don't buy sugar
You just have to touch my cup
I don't need sugar
It's sweet, stir it up
When I'm taking sips
From your dainty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips

You're confection, goodness knows
Oh, honey suckle rose

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lena's song "Honeysuckle Rose" are romantic and whimsical. It expresses the singer's love and admiration for their partner by comparing them to the sweet and fragrant honeysuckle rose flower. The singer believes that their partner is so sweet and wonderful that even the honeybees are jealous of their love. The flowers themselves droop and sigh when the partner passes by, symbolizing the partner's power over the natural world. The singer doesn't need to add sugar to their drink because their partner is enough to sweeten their life. The lines "You just have to touch my cup" and "When I'm taking sips from your dainty lips" illustrate the close and intimate relationship the two share.

The repetition of "Oh, honey" throughout the song emphasizes the love and affection the singer has for their partner. The use of imagery to describe the partner's impact on the world around them highlights the singer's belief that their love is larger than life itself. The lyrics are simple, yet effective in capturing the joyful and intoxicating feeling of being in love with someone.

this is my favorite song Lena ever did.

There are many great versions of this tune-- check Anita O'Day, Ella, etc. In jazz, it's not fair to say that anyone "owns" a tune-- Every artist has their own interpretation, and in many cases, each one is great in it's own right.

What a simply beautiful rendition. I do love Cassandra Wilson's modern take on this. Yet Lena's contemporary rendition, is quite a joy to listen to. Thanks for sharing this.

Heard this on BBC Radio 2's Sunday lunchtime showtunes program, Barbara Windsor stood in for Elaine Paige, and this was played! Wow, love the vocals!! Just so hot!! It also had me thinking that Nanci Griffith's song DROPS FROM THE FAUCET off The Dust Bowl Symphony album sounds very similar to this, and that's no bad thing!

creative liberty... songs like this are so passed around and everyone changes it a little bit to match their style
