How do you do
Lena Horne feat. Grover Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You do something to me
Something that simply mystifies me
Tell me, why should it be
You have the power to hypnotize me

Let me live 'neath your spell
You do that voodoo that you do so well
For you do something to me
That nobody else could do.

Let me live 'neath your spell
You do that voodoo that you do so well

For you do something to me
That nobody else could do

That nobody else could do

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Lena Horne's song "How Do You Do" featuring Grover convey the feeling of being mystified by someone and their ability to hypnotize. The singer is expressing confusion about why they feel so drawn to this person and acknowledging that they have a power over them that no one else has. The repetition of the lines "Let me live 'neath your spell/You do that voodoo that you do so well" emphasizes this idea of being under someone's control and entranced by them.

The use of the word "voodoo" adds a layer of mysticism and suggests that this power is almost supernatural. It's unclear if the singer is referring to a romantic attraction or simply a fascination with this person's abilities, but either way, they are in awe of them. The final lines "That nobody else could do" reinforce the idea that this person is unique and that the singer has never felt this way before.

Overall, the lyrics to "How Do You Do" are about the inexplicable power that some people can have over us, and the way that we can be drawn to them without fully understanding why.

John Sebastian wrote this song, He performed it at Woodstock in 1969, it was on his first solo album too, I sang this as a lullaby to my son, everybody should.

Does anyone know if this performance is on any of the Flip Wilson Show DVDs that are out? Beautiful performance. You guys below are taking this a little too seriiously.

@littleprincey

Anyone know on what show this was performed? I'm almost certain this is not from her "The Lady and Her Music" Broadway show, as clip narrator Billy Dee Williams implies. By the way, Joss Stone is the only other singer I know of to record this awesome song, releasing it on her 2003 "Soul Sessions" CD; however, Lena's version is tops--bar none...
