Gravity Rides Everything
Lenka Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh gotta see gotta know right now.
Whats that riding on your everything?
It isnt anything at all.
Oh gotta see gotta know right now.
Whats that writing on your shelf in the bathrooms and
The bad motels
No one really cared for it at all
Not the gravity plan.
Early early in the morning it pulls all on down my sore feet
I wanna go back to sleep.
In the motions and the things that you say.
It all will fall, fall right into place
As fruit drops, flesh it sags
Everything will fall/right into place
When we die some sink and some lay
But at least I dont see you float away

And all the spilt milk sex and weight
It all will fall, fall right into place.

Overall Meaning

In Lenka's song Gravity Rides Everything, the opening lines set up a sense of urgency in the listener- "Oh gotta see gotta know right now." The singer is asking her audience if they understand what is happening around them, specifically what is "riding on your everything" that isn't really anything at all. This line prompts one to reflect on the trivial things in life that we give so much weight to, unknowingly letting them direct our courses of action. The following lines mention the writing on the shelf in the bathroom- seemingly unimportant scribbles and doodles, marked in a place of vulnerability. We are then exposed to the line "Not the gravity plan," which implies that things may be happening according to some greater power, some sort of pull or force. Then Lenka sings of "early early in the morning," when "it pulls all on down my sore feet." This line seems to be a reflection on the weight of the world- the burden that we all carry- dragging us down.

As the song continues, Lenka begins to introduce ideas of fluidity and impermanence. "In the motions and the things that you say. It all will fall, fall right into place." These lines suggest that change is inevitable, and that even if things seem chaotic or unclear, eventually things will settle and make sense. This is further emphasized in the simile of fruit dropping and flesh sagging- natural processes of decay and gravity. The final section of the song tackles the notion of death and what happens in the end. Lenka sings "When we die some sink and some lay/ But at least I dont see you float away." The contrast between sinking and floating away prompts the listener to question what will happen to them once they die. And yet, Lenka asserts that "everything will fall, fall right into place." The song ends on the powerful notion that "all the spilt milk sex and weight/ It all will fall, fall right into place."
