Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
Leroy Gomez & Santa Esmeralda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, do you understand me now?
Sometimes I feel a little mad
But don't you know that no one alive can always be an angel
When things go wrong I feel real bad.

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree
With a joy that's hard to hide
And sometimes it seems that, all I have to do is worry
And then you're bound to see my other side

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

If I seem edgy, I want you to know,
That I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems, and I get my share,
And that's one thing I never mean to do

Cause I love you,
Oh,

Oh, oh, oh, baby - don't you know I'm human
I have thoughts like any other one
Sometimes I find myself, Lord, regretting
Some foolish thing, some little simple thing I've done

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Yes, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Yes, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

Yes, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by Leroy Gomez and Santa Esmeralda describe a person's desire to be understood in all aspects of their life, be it their highs and their lows, their good intentions and their moments of weakness. The song speaks to the universal human experience of wanting to be accepted for who we are, and not be judged for our mistakes or vulnerabilities. The opening line, "Baby, do you understand me now?" sets the tone for the singer's plea for understanding, and highlights the difficulty of being fully comprehended by someone else.

The chorus of the song, "I'm just a soul whose intentions are good, Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood," expresses the singer's hope that despite their imperfections and occasional "madness," they will be seen for their good intentions rather than their mistakes. The second verse speaks to the contrast between the carefree moments of life and the times when worry takes over, revealing the singer's vulnerable side. The bridge, "Oh, oh, oh, baby - don't you know I'm human," brings the message home, with the singer acknowledging their humanity and the imperfections that come with it.

Overall, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" is a plea for empathy and understanding, and a reminder that everyone has their moments of weakness, even when their intentions are good.

This is a 16 minute song and it's still not long enough. I'm 65yo and I can still feel the beat on the dance floor. God help me, I love this disco Era. There will never, ever be anything like it again. You had to be there to understand what I'm saying and how I'm feeling. Bensonhurst, Brooklyn here and I miss it so freaking much. 2000 Odyssey, after hour clubs and dancing and partying till all hours of the morning. What I wouldn't give to go back in time, to a much simpler time when music and friendship actually meant something....oh well, time for my nap....lmao. much love to all my fellow disco people out there....
