After an eighteen-year hiatus, the band announced their 2023 “Summer of Green” Tour, where they’d play the album “Animals” by Pink Floyd in its entirety. The Frog Brigade now features Sean Lennon on guitar, Harry Waters on the keyboard, and Paolo Baldi on drums, with the only original members left being Les Claypool on bass and vocals, Mike Dillon on percussion, and Skerik on the saxophone.
Hendershot
Les Claypool's Frog Brigade Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Mama's little man
And she calls him Hendershot
His mama called him Hendershot
Be seen and not be heard, they told him
He grew into a big man they call
Hendershot
Walking down the side streets of SoHo
Chances are you'll bump into our friend
Hendershot
That's Hendershot
Sitting on a blanket near Saint Marks
Is a man selling handbags he gets from
Hendershot
But he doesn't call him Hendershot
The lyrics of Les Claypool's Frog Brigade's song Hendershot shed light on the story of an isolated boy named Lucy who grew up to be a man nicknamed Hendershot. Lucy was not just lonely but also homely; thus, he became an easy target for bullying, with his mother being the only person who truly understood him. Hendershot's mother named him because of his fragility and need for protection, and she always called him by that name. In society, he was instructed to be silent and ignored, which shaped his personality.
Hendershot grew into a big man, and his nickname stuck as he never spoke up to defend himself, so people referred to him as Hendershot. In the streets of Soho, where people are usually busy, Hendershot would stand out due to his unusual appearance, and it was likely that if one roamed there, they would bump into him. There is a seller of handbags near Saint Marks, and the bags most likely come from Hendershot without being referred to by his nickname.
