Running the Gauntlet
Les Claypool's Frog Brigade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What are you wanting from me?
Look over my shoulder as much as you please
We're primed and we're ready to go toe to toe with disease

And what are you hoping to see?
Would it set you back if I drop to my knees?
We're running the gauntlet and filling our socks with debris
And what kind of game shall it be?

If I played any faster, my tendons would freeze
And the boys in the back room are charging exorbitant fees

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Les Claypool's Frog Brigade's song Running the Gauntlet are both mysterious and thought-provoking. The singer is addressing someone who seems to be constantly observing and judging them, questioning their motives and desires. The imagery of looking over one's shoulder suggests a sense of paranoia, which is further emphasized by the idea of going "toe to toe with disease." This could refer to a literal confrontation with illness or perhaps something more metaphorical, such as facing one's own personal demons or societal issues.

The second stanza raises more questions, as the singer wonders what the observer is hoping to witness. They even suggest that they might drop to their knees, leading one to wonder whether this is a plea for help or a sign of submission. The line "filling our socks with debris" is particularly intriguing, as it suggests that the journey they are on is messy and difficult. It could be interpreted as a metaphor for life and the struggles we face along the way.

The final stanza brings a sense of urgency and danger to the song, with the singer referencing a high-stakes game. They suggest that they are already pushing themselves to their limits, with the boys in the back room charging "exorbitant fees." This could be a nod to the music industry and the pressure to constantly produce profitable material. Overall, the lyrics of Running the Gauntlet are cryptic but powerful, leaving the listener to ponder their meaning.
