During his school years, he played trumpet with a jazz band, and then, with a younger brother, went on to form the skiffle unit, The Mourners. Mud formed in 1968, with Gray on vocals, Dave Mount on drums, Rob Davis on guitar, and Ray Stiles on bass. After several unsuccessful singles including "Flower Power", they were signed to Mickie Most's RAK record label. Mud had a string of hits written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, including two which topped the UK Singles Chart in 1974, "Lonely This Christmas", and "Tiger Feet". They disbanded in 1980.
Gray had a Top 40 solo hit in 1977 with his cover version of "A Groovy Kind of Love", and would later go out with backing musicians under the name 'Les Gray's Mud', but he never enjoyed the same success as he had with the original outfit.
He died on February 21, 2004, of a heart attack, whilst fighting throat cancer. Family members include cousins Jeffrey, Michael and Julian Clarke with thier children Marcus, Nathan, Cathrin and Olivia Clarke.
What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For
Les Gray Lyrics

If they don't mean what they say?
They make me glad, they make me sad,
They make me wanna a lot of things I never had.
You're fooling around with me now
Well you lead me on, then you run away.
Hey that's all right
I'll get you alone tonight
So what do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don't mean what they say?
What do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don't mean what they say?
They make me glad, they make me sad,
They make me wanna a lot of things I never had.
You're fooling around with me now
Well you lead me on, then you run away.
Hey that's all right
I'll get you alone tonight
And maybe you'll find your messing with dynamite.
So what do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don't mean what they say?
Hey that's all right
I'll get you alone tonight
And maybe you'll find your messing with dynamite.
So what do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don't mean what they say?
If they don't mean what they say?
(Oh those eyes!)
The lyrics to Les Gray's "What Do You Wanna Make Those Eyes At Me For" are a playful yet cautionary tale about the risks and thrills of flirting. The song is set to an energetic rock and roll beat, complete with hand claps, and Gray's confident delivery adds to the flirtatious tone. However, the lyrics suggest that the singer is not entirely sure if their love interest's actions are genuine or just a game. He asks why they are making eyes at him if they don't mean what they say, and acknowledges that they are fooling around with him. The singer seems to relish the excitement of the chase and the possibility that he might get the girl.
Despite the upbeat tempo and playful lyrics, there is an underlying sense of danger in the song. The line "maybe you'll find you're messing with dynamite" implies that the singer knows he is taking a risk by pursuing this flirtation. He also acknowledges that he could end up hurt or disappointed in the end. The song seems to be a celebration of the thrill of flirting and the excitement of the chase, but also a warning to be careful of playing with fire.

I like better the version Billy Murray and Ada Jones did in 1917. Maybe because I really love so old music. Ada Jones and Billy Murray was the most poplar female and male duo in acustic era. I like better music from acustic era than music from my own time ( Iโm born in 1969)
