Master Of The House
Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

My band of soaks, my den of dissolute′s
My dirty jokes, my always pissed as newts
My sons of whores spend their lives in my inn,
Homing pigeons homing in
They fly through my doors,
And they crawl out on all fours

Welcome, Monsieur, sit yourself down
And meet the best innkeeper in town
As for the rest, all of 'em crooks:
Rooking their guests and crooking the books
Seldom do you see
Honest men like me
A gent of good intent
Who′s content to be

Master of the house, doling out the charm
Ready with a handshake and an open palm
Tells a saucy tale, makes a little stir
Customers appreciate a bon-viveur
Glad to do a friend a favor
Doesn't cost me to be nice
But nothing gets you nothing
Everything has got a little price!

Master of the house, keeper of the zoo
Ready to relieve 'em of a sou or two
Watering the wine, making up the weight
Pickin′ up their knick-knacks when they can′t see straight
Everybody loves a landlord
Everybody's bosom friend
I do whatever pleases
Jesus! Won′t I bleed 'em in the end!

Master of the house, quick to catch yer eye
Never wants a passerby to pass him by
Servant to the poor, butler to the great
Comforter, philosopher, and lifelong mate!
Everybody′s boon companion
Everybody's chaperone
But lock up your valises
Jesus! Won′t I skin you to the bone!

Food beyond compare. Food beyond belief
Mix it in a mincer and pretend it's beef
Kidney of a horse, liver of a cat
Filling up the sausages with this and that
Residents are more than welcome
Bridal suite is occupied
Reasonable charges
Plus some little extras on the side!
(Oh Santa!)

Charge 'em for the lice, extra for the mice
Two percent for looking in the mirror twice
Here a little slice, there a little cut
Three percent for sleeping with the window shut
When it comes to fixing prices
There are a lot of tricks I knows
How it all increases, all them bits and pieces
Jesus! It′s amazing how it grows!

(Oh, sorry love
Let′s get something done about that)
I used to dream that I would meet a prince
But God Almighty, have you seen what's happened since?

Master of the house? Isn′t worth my spit!
Comforter, philosopher' and lifelong shit!
Cunning little brain, regular Voltaire
Thinks he′s quite a lover but there's not much there
What a cruel trick of nature landed me with such a louse
God knows how I′ve lasted living with this bastard in the house!

Master of the house!
Master and a half!
Comforter, philosopher
Don't make me laugh!
Servant to the poor, butler to the great
Hypocrite and toady and inebriate!

Everybody bless the landlord!
Everybody bless his spouse!

Everybody raise a glass

Raise it up the master's arse
Everybody raise a glass to the Master of the House!

Overall Meaning

"Master of the House" is a lively and humorous song performed by the innkeeper, Thénardier, in the musical Les Miserables. Thénardier is known for his corrupt practices and fraudulent behavior. The lyrics depict the inn as a den of debauchery and Thénardier as a manipulative and opportunistic character.

The first stanza sets the scene by introducing Thénardier's clientele, referring to them as "soaks" and "dissolutes." These individuals are no strangers to vice and enjoy crude humor. Thénardier proudly declares his inn as their gathering place, comparing his customers to homing pigeons returning to his establishment. The phrase "they crawl out on all fours" suggests the debased state in which they leave.

Thénardier then welcomes a Monsieur, presenting himself as the best innkeeper in town. He acknowledges that the rest of the characters at the inn are all crooks, cheating their guests and manipulating financial accounts. However, he claims to be an honest man with good intentions, content with his role as the master of the house. He exhibits charm, tells humorous stories, and likes to attract attention. Although he may occasionally do favors for friends, Thénardier emphasizes the need for reciprocation, stating that "nothing gets you nothing."

Continuing with his self-appointed titles, Thénardier declares himself as not only the master of the house but also the keeper of the zoo. This signifies his position as a caretaker, responsible for handling different types of guests and situations. He boasts about diluting the wine and stealing from the intoxicated visitors. Thénardier revels in being a landlord, stating that everyone loves him and respects him. However, he also warns others to be cautious around him, indicating that he will take advantage of any opportunity to exploit them.

The song then takes a more grotesque turn as Thénardier brags about the low-quality food provided at his inn. He mentions using questionable ingredients, such as horse kidneys and cat livers, in his sausages. This highlights the inn's unsanitary conditions and Thénardier's disregard for his customers' well-being. He jokes about overcharging for small services, such as looking in the mirror multiple times, and reveals his tactics for inflating prices.

The final stanza shifts the focus to Thénardier's personal life. He confesses that he used to dream of marrying a prince, but due to unfortunate circumstances, he ended up with nothing more than a worthless spouse. Thénardier mocks his own intellect, referring to himself as a "cunning little brain" but acknowledging his lack of substance. He criticizes his wife as well, expressing his dissatisfaction with their relationship and their shared existence.

The song ends with a chorus celebrating Thénardier as the master of the house. The lyrics sarcastically praise him as a comforter, philosopher, and lifelong companion, highlighting the hypocrisy and deceit in this description. Thénardier is exposed as a manipulative and drunken individual, with no true concern for others. The song presents a satirical portrayal of a landlord, exposing the dark and corrupt side of Thénardier's character.

Wonderful performance.

@geraldman24

Just oozes sleaze. What a performance.

@cheeselord3655

Yeah, the others don't really seem to fit what I view as Thenardier. The 25th anniversary one made him seem halfway insane, and the movie one was only a pale imitation of this one.
