Among several of my 2022 New Years resolutions: I will publish DnD material, probably on DM’s guild, and I will figure out what to do with my YouTube channel. I have ideas for both of those things, but I need people to keep me honest, because I’m bad at making myself sit down and write things. Except for this I guess.

I even agree with it in a sense. Appealing to more audiences is only good for everyone involved.

But anything that reminds that mainstream audience about where this came from and where to go when season 1 of the show ends and they want more content, I welcome it.

Just sharing ideas.

It would not hurt my feelings if animated Vox Machina shivers in fear the first time they all have to open a door as a group.

Barbarians actually have quite a lot of number-crunching on every hit compared to most classes, and a lot of their subclasses add weirder stuff to it (wild magic effects, bonus Radiant damage on your first hit, etc...). Ashton's homebrew subclass is definitely the Hard Mode for "Barbarian Math", though, and it's largely Taleisin's own fault since IIRC it was his idea that Matt helped him with.

A lot of it is probably because Ashley was on-and-off a lot with Pike and Yasha. But remember how she was with Yasha near the end? Yasha "I've got the robe!!! Nydooryn? Yasha "let's pick up trapped books in the Happy Fun Ball even though we're in a hurry" Nydooryn?

She became more and more at ease when she became a bit more permanent, and a bit more chaotic as well!

I was solidly hoping for dice rolls to take some kind of form in the show. Random moments that tell us this is a game. Like during a fight one character is sitting back, and when questioned why they aren’t helping, they answer that it isn’t their initiative yet. Or someone can’t cast a spell because they are out of spell slots.

Or a restrained character attempts to cast a spell and then Matt’s disembodied voice asks “Is there a semantic component to the spell?...”

I would enjoy these moments. But I can also see some of that being confusing to people that haven’t watched Critical Role or played DnD.

It can be hard to justify certain things in a cohesive narrative that are easily justified by following the dice or the rules of the game, and I think they’re going to lean more toward cohesive narrative than making it feel that close to actual D&D. It could be fun to have a little die pop up and actually show you the roll an action represents, that way you can see that an attack missed or an action failed because you see the little die land on a 2 or whatever, but I bet that was an extra meta that they didn’t want to deal with.

It even kinda seems like the show is splitting away from DnD in general. I believe I heard Bigby’s Hand called Scanlan’s Hand in the last trailer. That’s my only example, but the only reason I can think they did that is to separate themselves from things that belong to the game.

@@Drujd I'm still not sure. If he stays, and they bring a guest in, that's going to be 9 players. That's a lot for Matt to deal with and I'm not sure 5 people could easily fit in one of the camera shots. Also, in the intro, while there is a shot of him by himself with his name, he's not in any of the "table shots" or the group pose at the end.
