Surrender
Less Than Jake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mother told me, yes, she told me I'd meet girls like you
She also told me, "Stay away, you'll never know what you'll catch"
Just the other day
I heard a soldier falling off some Indonesian junk that's going round

Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender but don't give yourself away
Father says, "Your mother's right, she's really up on things"
"Before we married, Mommy served in the WACS in the Philippines"
Now, I had heard the WACS recruited old maids for the war
But Mommy isn't one of those, I've known her all these years

Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away

Whatever happened to all this season's losers of the year?
Every time I got to thinking, where'd they disappear?
When I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch
Rolling numbers, rock and rolling, got my Kiss records out

Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender but don't give yourself away

Away
Away

Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird

Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender but don't give yourself away

Overall Meaning

Less Than Jake's song "Surrender" tells the story of a young man who seems to be struggling with the conflicting advice he has received from his parents about women. His mother warned him about women like the ones he is now attracted to, warning him to stay away from them. However, his father has a different perspective and thinks his wife is knowledgeable about things. He shares that his mother was in the WACS in the Philippines before they got married, which was a way to recruit old maids for the war. The singer knows his mother isn't one of those old maids but is perplexed by the different messages he is receiving from his parents. The confusion is only amplified when he sees them rolling numbers, rocking and rolling, and listening to Kiss records.

The song is a commentary on the generational divide in society and how the expectations and perspectives of different generations differ. The young man is struggling to reconcile his own desires, the expectations from his parents, and the reality of his parents' behavior, which seems to contradict their advice. The lyrics show how societal norms and values differ across generations and how the younger generation often struggles to understand the decisions made by their elders.
