If Only
Li Xiang-Ian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All my troubles gone wild
Trying to get away
I walked a thousand miles
Sometimes life kicks up the dirt
Living in a world full of hurt
I'm always asking why
Can you hear my cries through the night
I keep moving forward with my feet on the ground
My time is now
The darkness inside of me turned to shining light
If there was one thing I could say
Do you know what I've been through
If Only You Knew
When I cross that line
I may never return
The sun's going down it's the end of the day
I got some bridges to burn
I know what people say about me
I'm not here to play their games
I've got no place to go
But I need you to know
I'll go there anyway
The darkness inside of me turned to shining light
If there was one thing I could say
Do you know what I've been through
If Only You Knew
The darkness inside of me turned to shining light
If there was one thing I could say

Do you know what I've been through
If Only You Knew

This is one of my favorite songs ever and often play it on guitar. Anyway, I'm a big Teresa Teng fan though only recently I realized several of her hit songs are rooted from Li Xianglan. Yet, I only recently learned more about Li Xianglan's bitter and unfortunate history. As an Asian-American married to a Chinese woman and growing up embracing all cultures, especially through Chinese and Japanese films and music, China and Japan relationship can be quite a sensitive topic. History can't erase what happened between both countries and it's important to teach our children never to repeat history's mistakes.

Many Teraesa Teng's songs are rooted from old songs in 30's and 40's Shanghai.
