After struggling with a few producers over artistic preferences, Manuel Elsesser (g) and Jochen W. Thoma (voc) decided to take fate in their own hands and worked together to produce their debut album "A Bitch Is A Bitch".
Recruiting a local drummer and bass player, the group was complete - right on time for the upcoming recording sessions in early 2006.
The resulting work, with the diverse styles of the band members, proved to be a musical success.
After good reviews in national print media and online magazines worldwide, LICK AND A PROMISE started getting internet radio airplay on various stations and went on to reach the German finals at the international "Bodog Battle" band contest.
Following some line-up changes - introducing Ulli Bieber (dr, perc) and Volker Thoma (bg, org) - the band returned to the scene in early 2009 with a handful of new acoustic songs, some of which immediately made it on the radio at a local station near their hometown. Later that year, LICK AND A PROMISE started touring Germany in support of their new EP - unplugged.
As of summer 2010, the band is eventually recording the much-anticipated, full-length follow-up to their debut album, due December 1, and getting ready for their very first US live shows in Los Angeles, CA, in the winter.
Hard to Say Goodbye
Lick And A Promise Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We might not be fooling around today
If we go all the way
All there is after us is the songs that we play
Say goodbye good
All we've got is right now if you're not going my way
The eyes are listening
We might not mean anything that we say
We might not be fooling around today
No way no way
Trees caught fire when your eyes lit up
The seasons changed and the movies stopped
The front lights are out the curtains are drawn
Hours before our first days are gone
At the end of a song so long
We might not know what we've done
We might not be fooling around today
So say goodbye good
Say hello then anything good
The lyrics of Lick And A Promise's song "Hard To Say Goodbye" depict a bittersweet love story, where the singer and their lover contemplate whether to part ways or stay together. The line "Say goodbye good" sets the melancholic mood of the song, hinting at the possibility of a breakup. The lyrics also suggest a sense of urgency and carpe diem, as the singer acknowledges that "All we've got is right now" and that "If we go all the way, all there is after us is the songs that we play." Through these lines, the song's lyrics emphasize the fragility and fleetingness of life.
The chorus, which repeats the line "We might not be fooling around today," further underscores this doomed sense of urgency. The singer seems to be torn between their desire for the person they love and the knowledge that they might not be meant to be together. The lines "Trees caught fire when your eyes lit up, The seasons changed and the movies stopped" paint a vivid picture of the intense emotions that the singer is experiencing in the moment. In the end, the song leaves the listener with a sense of ambiguity, as the singer admits that "We might not know what we've done," but they continue to hold on, hoping that they can salvage something from their relationship.
