I'd love to see video essays about the story this music video tells. It feels like such a beautifully-crafted narrative, as well as using so many scenes from so many movies and giving it a greater meaning as another part of such a huge, complex story of life. Every few months I come back to this video, and every time I watch it I feel like it’s implying something different than the last time I saw it. Sometimes it gives me the feeling that it’s a criticism of the overwhelming homogeneity of the modern film industry and Hollywood. Sometimes I feel like it’s a general neutral observation on the formulae of scenes and moods that are innate in most films. And other times it just seems like a super sleek megacut of film scenes that look cool, cause why not?

But ultimately I think that’s why this video in particular is so genius, and why I feel compelled to revisit it constantly; it implies nothing. Every single clip, every second of this video consists entirely of repurposed media that was taken from other sources. The only actual imprint of the artist that you could glean from this video would perhaps be the subtle editing decisions made, and maybe the specific source material used within — but those qualities are ultimately irrelevant to understanding the video itself.
It seems to me that the whole point of this video is that there is no inherent message to be derived from it. Everyone who watches it will read into it in a different way. The video is simply a mirror of the feelings that you alone project onto it.

I think, like so much of PC Music's output, it's both a criticism and an embrace of the mainstream. It's a challenge asking us what we value culturally, and why. Are we just molded into conformity by pop culture and marketing, or is every pop cultural trope a product of some sincere human truth? You probably won't ever get a straight answer from A. G. Cook, but I personally think the answer is "both".

Is the actor insincere, because they are simply pretending to be feeling a certain way? Are they sincere, because they are identifying and re-experiencing emotions they've felt themselves that they can ascribe to the character? Is a film that moves us sincere because it's art, but insincere if it made hundreds of millions of dollars for a studio? Are emotions any less real if they're easily packaged and consumed, or are they easily packaged and consumed because they run so deep and universally? PC Music deliberately forces you to consider these questions and decide how you want to engage with it.

Personally: I'm a big fan of the author David Foster Wallace, who wrote a lot about how irony and insincerity become a mental prison, a fractal taking one away from the shared human emotions, however difficult and compromised in an electronic world, that make our lives meaningful. I choose to believe that PC Music is ultimately engaging with the tropes they do out of sincerity, because that's how I engage with the output, but more than anything I think PC Music's raison d'être is to make you ask this question.
