Learned this as a kid. My motivation is to succeed and have my fam succeed too.
Materials are ok w a limitation, having to much of something tends to be way of not looking inside. Doesnt make you a bad person. Just shows that you need to kinder to yourself.

When I was a kid I had a "friend" with rich parents. He ve got so much stuff.

He ve got rollerblades, but he could sky, guitars but he couldn't play, ext.

When I've got rollerblades it become my full time obsession, I didn't have time for another stuff.

Same when I had a guitar.

Each of items became more valuable more fulfilling the more time you spending on it, the more you perfect your skill. And what only you need those times is food, bed to sleep, simple clothes and you happy.

Glad I grew up with no cell phone or PC too! Also glad I lived out in the country and could enjoy fishing, hunting, swimming in the pond, riding bikes until dark-thirty, and reading books at bedtime. Such a happy period in my life. And the minute I retired, I moved right back to the lifestyle from whence I came. Couldn't be happier. It's all about family and the joy of being alive. My PC makes quick work of paying bills and catching up on the news, otherwise, it sits alone for all but an hour or so a day. My phone isn't touched unless it rings. Life is good!

I picked my kids up from school one day and I’ll never forget. My son and daughter began asking me questions about me not having tech devices when I was young and they felt sorry for me because I must’ve been so bored 😂 I’m like no kids I feel bad for y’all. I think if the world was safer and had more friendly activities for younger children and even teens it be different and they could have such experiences but the way the world is at least from my perception it seems more geared towards adults and less child family friendly than it used to be it seems even thinks for children and young people now care more about marketing and numbers than values much less safety and preserving the innocence of youth that so often is stolen technology isn't perfect and certainly isn't the solution but better to leave them monitored in a space you know they are near and save than outside in the woods or at a candy store unattended where the trained professionals of the world in trafficking and child predators are constantly on the hunt for some poor young soul to take and destroy for their own perverse purposes.

When I was in middle school, I got bullied if I didn't wear fashion brand clothes. But as I got older, I realized that a lot of the kids that were bullying other kids that were from poorer families that couldn't afford the latest fashion, were actually from poor families themselves. And probably a lot of people know that this is the golden age of materialism, everybody wants to show off their knew sneakers etc. I've been thinking about this a lot and have been trying my best to keep away from it, being different. It's hard let me tell you, it's not easy. But if you want to succeed, you have to sacrifice. When I watched the video, I already knew about it. Meaning I'm already on the right way and you should be too. Be different.

Impressive how thoughtful you are already at that age.
One thing I would suggest is: don't try to be different, just be rational. And the rational thing to do is analyze everything without a bias. Not everything that is "normal" is bad, just identify which things are bad, like you did with too much materialism. If you can be just different in those aspects, but "normal" in the good aspects, you will also still fit very well into the society and be a social person, which has many benefits and gives you many opportunities to meet good people.

Growing up in a mid-class family way back in the early '90s is such a treasure, no gadgets, no fancy shoes, no expensive toys just pure fun. We play the whole day every weekend, we play also this called "patentero" with no slippers so that we can run faster, playing hide and seek at night and we swap clothes to lure the one who's looking at us, and lastly, I fight bullies.

Sadly, new generations cant experience it right now because of these techs and new stuff. What they saw on the net or on Tv or even with their friends they want to have it too just to be accepted. It seems like they can even appreciate small things now, So sad what I am witnessing right now.

Games have started doing that too. Before games were all about merely enjoying them. Finishing them or not were all up to you and how much you wanted out of it. Now battlepasses and the like have been introduced, with the concept of "If you don't play for this much within this timeframe, you will lose out on some cool looking stuff". For some reason though, those kinds of systems just makes me not want to play. Even Animal crossing, where it's all about enjoying it a little bit every day and enjoy the smaller things, I just can't handle having to go in every day to check up on my town. I love getting deep into one game at a time. And at the same time I need variety, which means I tend to jump between 2-3 games at a time. But the moment I feel that the games control me instead of the other way around, I lose interest quickly. Extrinsic motivation ruins so much for me that I end up just not playing the game altogether.

I actually feel blessed that I grew up (in the 80s-90s) with so few material possessions. We couldn't afford it being on mostly one NZ income and 5 kids to feed.
But thankfully mum knew how to sew clothes, plant a variety of foods in the garden while teaching us to be fairly self sufficient. So we figured out early on how to create our own fun without needing many toys or material items.
Now days we've taken those values into our own homes and even though we can afford more if we want to, it's just not a priority. We prefer the value of presence over presents. If I ever spend money on my kids, I'll use it towards a fun experience shared with family and friends. Instead of the latest toy/item that will only offer us a temporary high before being forgotten about in a few weeks/months time. Unlike great memories which usually last a lifetime.🥰💜

Ah, I remember the good old days growing up in Greater Manchester. We would step out and be out all day! We would go fishing, catch frogs and tadpoles, go on bike rides and get lost, play wembley, football, cricket, tag, hide and seek, build swings off trees, light fires (safe ones only, honest), build dens, play with conkers, marbles, cards, collect football stickers, wrestling atickers etc. We would only come home when we had to and by then it was tea time or even later! Materialism often leads to "showy display of one's means of life". I read that from somewhere and that smacks truth.
After reading some comments I think it needs to be clarified. Materialism is not specific to certain items. Just because you're not tied to your phone or don't have an expensive one doesn't make you not materialistic. Materialism in principle has to do with your pursuit in life. It applies to any material item such as clothes, cars, etc. Materialism is a mindset and it's a trap you can get into quick. Trying to get the necessities like a house or car can lead to materialism. The desire to own a luxury house or luxury car instead of a modest car. That's also materialism if that's your pursuit. On the other hand, you can still be wealthy and not be materialistic if you're not making the obtaining of things your main concern in life.

I realized this a few years back hence the reason I deleted all my social media accounts like facebook, instagram etc. Now I’m focused on myself and been happy with my life more than ever.

I can choose the videos I want to watch. Unlike FB, IG or Twitter where you don't have control over others' posts. So yeah. I don't have FB, IG or Twitter but I watch YT. Works for me and I'm a happy camper.

@Jamie Long123 Yes that's right but you have friends who are actually real friends of yours and family. You will see their posts and the posts they liked and their friends post sometimes depending on the privacy settings. YT is basically showing us videos though it's now flooded with crap Tik Toks. I don't really want to know what others are doing anyway so leaving FB was not a problem for me.

Born in the mid 80's, so glad I got to grow up playing outside. Building forts, getting dirty, getting into minor trouble... Being a kid without Internet, Cell phones or the 24/7 News cycle.

Stopped Facebook and Instagram more than a year now. And stopped posting photos (reduce taking photos) on my WhatsApp status for few weeks now. I feel much better when letting my eyes enjoy the sceneries when I go for nature walk.

This is my second time being off social media just so I can focus. It’s been a month, the first time I did it, it was 1 year off now I’m restarting. I’m also in bed by 8:30 pm and I wake up at 0400. I also stop eating by 7:30 pm and get off my phone by 7. So life is great right now.

I did that exercise at the end with myself. I had a list of 10 things I have been wanting for a while. Analysed and realised that after the initial 'rush' of buying them i'd soon get bored.
However when I looked at my list of things I really truly feel satisfied with long term and enter a flow state, already have all the things I need!

Recommend giving it a go, light bulb moment!

I love riding and working on dirtbikes. It makes me happy in many ways. I take pictures of my work and progress and sometimes post them show my happiness. It does make me happy to know other people like my work or are proud of my progress. I’m not poor but I’m not rich. I don’t have a single friend so I talk to strangers online and either learn or teach or sometimes tell a story. Yep.

Excellent talk and makes 100% sense, if you don't understand this you're lost in this world or you're in complete denial! I've recently taken steps to delete all of the toxic social media apps and only I watch motivational/wholesome content going forward on Youtube, I've cut out the amount of time I spend watching movies and gaming also. Find a hobby, go cycling, learn a skill, see friends and set rules with them especially if they cant put their fucking phones down and engage in conversation. I've been saying this shit for ages and people look at me like I'm the stupid one...

The piano analogy rang so true for me. I spent years playing guitar for my own enjoyment, and eventually got a band together. All the years of prep paid off, and we became relatively successful, but last year it just stopped being fun. It had become TOO extrinsic. I'm now in the process of completely revamping the whole thing...people think I'm mad to mess with a good thing, but I can see now I'm just going back to my intrinsic motivation.

I noticed at some point in my life that the more I concerned myself with my external appearance the more it would elicit social anxiety when I would go out. You start to pay too much attention to your own appearance making you overly self-conscious. I'm not saying to avoid grooming or taking care of yourself but instead to throw any concerns or thought out the window once you walk out of your house.

Make sure your "spirituality" is based off truth, the Bible. There are demons out there in many religions, if not all of them, pretending to be the true God, or give you some experience, but they are deceiving many people. Everything that I am using now is old and worn out but still functional. I spent most of my time in learning new things and still find that time is not enough. The only thing we do not have enough is time and we only live once. Experience doesn't always have to be materialism although I can't deny the fact that money is equally important too.

You know I remember a time before s Facebook. When I was a teenager. I did feel happier then. Part of it is the lack of responsibility I had back then. Part of it is also the fact I spent a lot of time with my friends in the woods playing paintball. Now that I’m older I’ve realized the only thing that matters in life is friends and family. This is a great clip I’m going to share it with my wife. I will rewatch this a few times so the message sinks in. I guess fishing all the time is good for me!

It's probably the mystery that's now missing. Meeting a friend you haven't seen for some time would make you feel ecstatic. The question what's up made a lot of sense. Now that almost everyone is posting every detail down to whatever they ate for breakfast just blew the mystery away. There's no more reason to be curious and wonder what everyone is up to.

I consider the 90s to have just the right amount of technology. Just enough to make life easier, but it didn’t consume you. Cellphones were basically meant to just talk on. The internet was cool, but nothing what it is now. I’m so thankful for the time period I grew up in.
