Swim Good
Life is Better Blonde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That's a pretty big trunk on my Lincoln town car, ain't it
Big enough to take these broken hearts and put 'em in it
Now I'm drivin' 'round on the boulevard, trunk bleedin'
And every time the cops pull me over, they don't ever see them
They never see them

And I've got this black suit on
Roamin' around like I'm ready for a funeral
Five more miles 'til the road runs out

I'm about to drive in the ocean
I'm about to swim from somethin' much bigger than me
Kick off my shoes and swim good, swim good
Take off my suit and swim good, swim good

Got some pretty good beats on this 808 CD, yeah
Memory seats I'm sittin' on stay heated
I would've got my windows tinted, but what's the difference
'Cause If I'm feeling like a ghost
Ever since I lost my baby

I've got this black suit on
Roamin' around like I'm ready for a funeral
One more mile 'til the road runs out

I'm about to drive in the ocean
I'm about to swim from somethin' much bigger than me
Kick off my shoes and swim good, swim good
Take off my suit and swim good, swim good

I'm goin' off
Don't try stopping me
I'm goin' off
Don't try saving me
No flares
No vest
No fears
Waves are washin' me out

I'm about to drive in the ocean
I'm about to swim from somethin' much bigger than me
Kick off my shoes and swim good, swim good
Take off my suit and swim good, swim good

That's a pretty big trunk on my Lincoln town car, ain't it
(Don't try stopping me)
Big enough to take these broken hearts and put 'em in it
(Don't try saving me)
No vest
(Swim good, swim good)
No fears

(Swim good)
Waves are washin' me out

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Swim Good" by Life is Better Blonde depicts a sense of desolation for the singer who's suffered through heartbreak and is now ready to end everything. The first verse introduces the idea of a "big trunk" in his car to "take these broken hearts and put 'em in it," an image of deep emotional turmoil that the singer can't seem to shake. He then talks about his outfit, a black suit which symbolizes death and the readiness to embrace it. The chorus is particularly interesting because it illustrates his journey toward self-destruction. He's driving to the ocean and has every intention of driving off into the water, but before he does, he must first strip himself of the costume of death, the black suit. Finally, the last few lines are somewhat of an epiphany as he accepts "waves are washing me out" - he's being figuratively cleansed and renewed through this act of near-self destruction.

In the second verse, the singer goes into more detail about his affliction, explaining that he feels like a ghost ever since he lost his baby, using figurative language to explain the pain he is going through. He then muses on his outfit again, speaking of the memory seats that keep him heated, a comfort he feels he deserves while driving towards his own demise. The second chorus reintroduces us to the idea that he is "about to swim from something much bigger than me," it's here we can gather that the singer's problems feel immense and insurmountable to him, to the point where the ocean and the waves seem like a better alternative than his current pain.
