Firing Squad
Lifehouse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Early morning rain crashing upon
My rooftop and my brain,
Woke up in my clothes
Feeling like I'm insane,
The hours pass like days
Like days

And now you're on the firing squad
I throw my hands up, I surrender
I don't want to be a fraud
I don't want to be the pretender
And I was like a lightning rod
I was always your defender
We were both right and wrong
I throw my hands up, I surrender

I see your eyes, hear your voice
Outside my window
Calling for me in a time of trouble
And you know I'd be there
Yes you know I'd be there

And now you're on the firing squad
I throw my hands up, I surrender
I don't want to be a fraud
I don't want to be the pretender
And I was like a lightning rod
I was always your defender
We were both right and wrong
I throw my hands up, I surrender

When I stand
And I watch
At the streetcar's rolling
As the wind is blowing,
And there's no way of knowing now

And now you're on the firing squad
I throw my hands up, I surrender
I don't want to be a fraud
I don't want to be the pretender
And I was like a lightning rod
I was always your defender

We were both right and wrong
I throw my hands up, I surrender

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Lifehouse's song "Firing Squad" paint a picture of melancholy and despair. The singer is awakened by the sound of raindrops on his rooftop and feels as if his mind is in disarray. The passing of time seems to have taken on an excruciatingly slow pace, and he is left feeling helpless and vulnerable. The lyrics take a dark turn when he admits that he feels as if he's caught in the crosshairs of a firing squad, which is a metaphor for the intense pressure he feels to conform to others' expectations without fully understanding why.

The chorus of the song sees the singer throw his hands up in surrender, giving up all the pretenses he has been struggling to keep up. He acknowledges that he doesn't want to be a fraud or a pretender, and that he has been playing the role of his loved one's defender for far too long. At the same time, he insists that they were both right and wrong, and that there is no point in battling anymore.

The song's final verses talk about our protagonist standing and watching a streetcar roll by as the wind blows, and the realization that there is no way of knowing for sure how things are going to play out. It's a poignant moment that encapsulates the sense of helplessness and despair that we have all felt at some point in our lives.
