The band formed after the demise of lead singer Alexander Gageβs longtime pop rock project Not So Lucky. After writing solo material, Gage was met by former Not So Lucky guitarist Noel Hernandez with a proposition: βLetβs start a rock band.β The two began collaborating and, after adding former Prom Night Fist Fight drummer Isaac Martinez, hit the studio. They recorded the first single as a trio, hoping to eventually add a rhythm guitarist and bassist. In due time, they met guitarist Andrew Saenz who fit in perfectly with their sound. After hearing they were looking for a bassist, longtime friend Nick Kraemer relocated from the valley to San Antonio to join the band.
LIKE GHOSTS prides themselves as completely effort. Everybody gets a say and everybody contributes in some shape or form. The songwriting process may begin with a riff or an idea and it gets passed around and each member gets input. Nobody in the band claims to be a master of their trade, but they strive to work hard and constantly get better. They are a team through and through and just like all great teams, they are fortunate enough to have a great coach. Producer Kevin Gates has been recording and producing Gageβs musical endeavors for years now and LIKE GHOSTS has become a benefactor of his production. With each recording session, the band has come out better and more precise. The band will be the first to tell you they owe the quality of their sound to Kevin.
The sound itself is difficult to summarize in terms of genre. When Noel approached Gage about starting a band he described the idea as pop rock with more edge. They retain a mid-2000s emo vibe along the lines of Taking Back Sunday and The Academy Is... on the surface, but upon further scrutiny, they are much more diverse. Fall Out Boy has played an integral part of the songwriting process for the band: whether it be the frenetic guitar work or tongue-in-cheek lyricism. Every member of LIKE GHOSTS has an eclectic taste of influences ranging from Goo Goo Dolls to Nickelback to Kanye West.
Other than the diverse musical influence and focus on teamwork, the band sets itself apart by attention to detail. The band is the number one priority, every member is married to it and they really do want it that bad. The music is driven off of hard work and they are constantly striving to be perfect. Noel provides the unofficial slogan: βIn this industry, even just to be considered mediocre, you have to be perfect.β After the success of Not So Lucky, Gage admits that he let some of that go to his head and didn't like how things ended. Nick, fresh out of the military had struggled with alcoholism before pledging to the band. LIKE GHOSTS is a rebirth for everybody involved, a second chance to go all in. All things may come to an end, but thereβs no stopping what happens after that.
