Wasting Time
Lily-white Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And if I'm wasting my time
Then nothing could be better
Than hangin' on the line
And waiting for a honest word forever

And if you're saying goodbye
Please don't you think me better
For recalling every rhyme
From the book the page
The line the word the letter

Well the windows turning blue
And the waters ever flowing
And I hope I'm not a fool

For laughing at myself
As you were going

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, the lyrics suggest that the singer is aware that they may be wasting their time on something or someone. However, they express that nothing could be better than being in this situation. It implies that despite the potential futility, the singer finds value in the process of waiting and hoping for something genuine and sincere to come their way.

The second verse seems to address someone who is about to say goodbye. The singer asks the person not to consider them as being superior or more deserving for remembering every little detail of their time together. It conveys a sense of longing and nostalgia as the singer holds onto every memory, whether it be a rhyme, a passage from a book, or even the smallest piece of communication.

The third verse portrays a changing environment. The windows are metaphorically turning blue, perhaps symbolizing a shift in mood or atmosphere. The waters are continuously flowing, implying that time is passing. Despite this, the singer ponders whether they might be foolish for laughing at themselves as the other person is leaving. It suggests a mix of self-awareness and self-deprecation, as they question their own reactions and emotions, wondering if they are making light of their own pain or vulnerability.

Overall, the lyrics convey a complex emotional state. They oscillate between a willingness to accept and even cherish a potentially meaningless situation, nostalgic remembrance of shared moments, and questioning one's own reactions to an impending departure. It captures the bittersweet essence of longing, uncertainty, and introspection that often accompanies human connections and the passage of time.

Regina's reaction to Maleficent's decisions is hilarious😂😂😂

David Stone

The way Snow said "What do you want?" irritated the hell outta me. Like she's so damn innocent. She has no right to judge Maleficent after taking her child from her. Hypocrite.

Jonathan Ryan

@David Stone it's not their fault that Lily and her plotline was dropped after season 4.

Further the absence of seeing them do so onscreen isn't proof of absence of it happening off-screen.

David Stone

@Jonathan Ryan Snow and David NEVER apologized to Lily though. They apologized to Emma and Maleficent. But never apologized to Lily.

Jonathan Ryan

The author literally manipulated the situation to force the event to happen though. Basically they were victims of literally being written out-of-character.

Don't get me wrong, it was a terribly evil action, but arguably they didn't have free will there and ultimately it was the authors crime.

Years later, regardless of knowing they didn't have free will, still swore to make it up to them. Which we can presume Lilith and Maleficent did get a happy ending based on teases in the final season.

Further Maleficent did have free will, and committed plenty of evil. So that "What do you want?" Isn't that unreasonable...

Villains force heroes into drastic measure because they're sick of fighting to keep their lives perfect. Short minded

David Stone

@LunAria LoonAtic still they should've had the common human decency to not take a child from it's mother!!

Okay, yes, snow and charming are hypocrites

But honestly I think what they did to Maleficent is why they hold onto their heroism so damn hard

They couldn’t handle what they did

Yes, I remember

@SDM Not up until they met him again when they freed him. They recognized him as the cart guy and then he revealed that he was the Author which was a surprise for the Charmings if you recall
