RUN

Music and lyrics: Linda Kvam

It was a summersday in -72
I saw the light, and so did you
I was born, and you just had enough
Enough of this world, enough of my mom
You packed you're bags, then you were gone.
Left us nothing, just headed on, out the door

Hungry kids and hungry hearts
My whole world was falling apart
Mom just cried, she didn't know what to think
The neighbors knew, cause after all,
they were the one who made the first call
Mom sat down, and poured herself another drink

Refr:
I run to the mountain
I run to the sea
I run away with this heart of mine.
I'm stuck in this world without a tear

All us kids were their pride and shame
Before dad went, he gave us all away
The orphanage got payed by the gouverment
Lessons learned, hide you´re heart
As the youngest I got a brand new start
They shaked me up till I was old enough to pay the rent

Refr:
I run to the mountain
I run to the sea

I run away with this heart of mine.
Im stuck in this world without a tear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Linda and Vika Bull’s song “Run Rudolph Run” tells the heart-wrenching story of a child who was left behind by their father at a very young age. The song speaks to the pain and trauma that comes from abandonment and the emotional toll that it takes on not only the child, but the entire family. The first verse tells the story of the day that the child’s father left home, leaving behind his wife and children without any explanation or resources. The second verse reveals the aftermath of abandonment as the family struggles to put their lives back together, with the children being the ones who paid the highest price for their father’s departure.

The chorus of “Run Rudolph Run” speaks to the child’s desire to escape the pain and turmoil that surrounds them, feeling like there is no hope of getting out of their current situation. The mountain and the sea represent a symbol of freedom for the child, a way to escape the emotional prison that they have found themselves in. The song sends a message that while the pain of abandonment can be overwhelming and seem impossible to overcome, there is always a way out, a chance to start over and make a new life for oneself. Overall, the song “Run Rudolph Run” tells a compelling story of human resilience and the struggle to survive in the face of adversity.

We were dead on arrival,
Safe home at last.
Not cannon fire dockside,
No flags half-mast.
We were sold out for silver
And a string of black pearls
On the loneliest island
At the edge of the world.

Like destiny's children,
Souls lost at sea.
No room on the lifeboat, you can hold on to me.
Hold on to me, hold on to me.

Now the voyage is over,
We're back on dry land.
In our eyes are the stories,
The rope and the brand.

Like destiny's children,

Souls lost at sea.
No room on the lifeboat, you can hold on to me.
Hold on to me, hold on to me.
Hold on to me, hold on to me, hold on to me.

We were dead on arrival,
Safe home at last.
Not cannon fire dockside,
No flags half-mast.
We were sold out for silver,
And a string of black pearls.
On the loneliest island,
At the edge of the world.

Hold on to me, hold on to me.
Hold on to me, hold on to me, hold on to me.

I lived in Oz for 40 years and was lucky enough to see the Black Sorrows and Joe's previous band (JoJo Zep and the Falcons) live. They were pretty hot in those days and on the radio a lot, but like many bands they were a bit forgotten after the 90s, but not by me, I regularly play the album and Hold onto me is still my fav.

Had the pleasure of being on Rockwiz with Joe. He starts a conversation and never finishes....and I don't give a shit. I could listen to him all day and night.

@stevenpenton2954

Joe is one of the best songwriters. Love this song.

This is one of those songs that can put you in a good mood even if it's wet and pissing down rain outside. For some reason I love the slow-mo of the boat going past near the end of this clip- there's something other-worldly and unexplainably calming about it.
