Break My Mind
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby oh baby
Tell the man at the ticket stand that you've changed your mind
Well let me run on out and tell the cab to keep his meter flying
Cause if you say goodbye to me babe you're gonna break my mind

Break my mind
Break my mind
Well I just can't stand to hear the big jet engines whine
Break my mind
Break my mind oh lord
Well if you leave you're gonna leave a babbling fool behind

Baby oh baby
Well let me take your suitcase off of that scale in time
Just tell the man that you suddenly developed a thing about high flying
Cause if you say goodbye to me you know you're gonna break my mind

Break my mind
Break my mind
Well I just can't stand to hear the big jet engines whine
Break my mind
Break my mind oh lord
Well if you leave you're gonna leave a babbling fool behind

Break my mind
Break my mind
Well I just can't stand to hear the big jet engines whine
Break my mind
Break my mind oh lord

Well if you leave you're gonna leave a babbling fool behind
Well if you leave you're gonna leave a babbling fool behind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Linda Ronstadt's song "Break My Mind" paint a picture of a lover pleading with their partner not to leave, fearing that it would be too much for them to handle. The opening lines express this sentiment as the lover begs their partner to change their mind about leaving. The lover is willing to do whatever it takes to keep their partner from leaving, even willing to run out of the venue to ask the cab driver to keep the meter running. The lover is undoubtedly afraid of being left alone, which would result in a shattered mind that cannot handle the sound of a big jet engine's whine. The repetition of the phrase "Break my mind" underscores this fear and the weight of the potential loss of the lover.

The song is easy to interpret on the surface. Nevertheless, it can be interpreted as something more than just a song about love, but also about mental health. It speaks of the fear of being alone and the fear of the unknown, which can lead to mental breakdowns. The fear that if someone you love leaves you, you will go crazy and be left with nothing but a broken mind. This song captures the fragility of the human mind and highlights how essential it is to have a support system in times of need.

Overall, "Break My Mind" is a heartfelt plea to a loved one not to leave and the fear of being left alone that consumes the lover. It serves as a reminder of the fragility of human emotions and the importance of seeking help when we are going through tough times.
