Cowboy
Lindemann Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Cowboy, hold your horse
Don't cross this lands
Your journey is about to end
I'll take your gun
You take the bus
This town is way too small and sexy
For the two of us
I am gonna rule this place alone
Now hit the road
Go piss and mourn all the way home
And tell your wife I'll see her soon

Since I was a kid I had this dream
I want to be a tough guy, wide and mean
Flying bullets, flying fists
Born to ride and to be kissed

Cowboy, cowboy
We can ride
Any horse and any bride
Cowboy, cowboy
Comes to town
Beat you up and shoot you down

I wear my blue jeans very tight
Please the ladies every night
They put money in my hat
Makes their husbands so upset

Cowboy, cowboy
We can ride
Any horse and any bride
Cowboy, cowboy
Comes to town
Beat you up and shoot you down

Cowboy, cowboy never die
Feels no pain, never cries
Cowboy you get all the chicks
Big, big horses and big dicks, yeah

Was never wild, never mean
Never joined a cowboy scene
I just ride my rocking chair
Hide my teeth in Tupperware
Cowboy, cowboy, this is sad
Vomit in your cowboy hat
Cowboy, cowboy, this is fun
Lost the bullets, fuck your gun
Cowboy, cowboy, we died
Every night I have to cry

Cowboy, cowboy, what a prick
Drunken horse and shrunken dick

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lindemann's song "Cowboy" depict a tale of power struggle where the singer, who seems to be the victor, commands the cowboy to leave town to never return. The cowboy is told to give up his gun and take the bus as the town is too small for both of them to coexist. The singer then goes on to declare that he will rule the town alone and suggests the cowboy to tell his wife that he'll see her soon. The lyrics seem to be mocking the cowboy culture and traditional notions of masculinity.

The song further describes the cowboy as a person born to ride and to be kissed while being tough and mean. He is also depicted as wearing tight blue jeans and pleasing the ladies every night, upsetting their husbands in the process. The song almost seems like a satire where the cowboy culture is brought down and labeled as a thing of the past, replaced by newer notions of masculinity. Amidst all this, the singer also seems to mock himself, revealing that he never joined a cowboy scene and now just rides his rocking chair hiding his teeth in Tupperware.
