Figure 09
Linkin Park저 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nothing ever stops all these thoughts and the pain attached to them
Sometimes I wonder why this is happenin'
It's like nothing I can do would distract me when
I think of how I shot myself in the back again
'cause from the infinite words I can say I
Put all pain you gave to me on display
But didn't realize instead of setting it free I
Took what I hated and made it a part of me

(Never goes away)
(Never goes away)

(And now)
(You've become a part of me)
(You'll always be right here)
(You've become a part of me)
(You'll always be my fear)
(I can't separate)
(Myself from what I've done)
(Giving up a part of me)
(I've let myself become you)

Hearing your name the memories come back again
I remember when it started happening
I see you n' every thought I had and then
The thoughts slowly found words attached to them
And I knew as they escaped away
I was committing myself to em n' everyday
I regret saying those things 'cause now I see that I
Took what I hated and made it a part of me

(Never goes away)
(Never goes away)

(And now)
(You've become a part of me)
(You'll always be right here)
(You've become a part of me)
(You'll always be my fear)
(I can't separate)
(Myself from what I've done)
(Giving up a part of me)
(I've let myself become you)

(Never goes away)
(Never goes away)
(Never goes away)
(Never goes away)

(Get away from me)
Give me my space back you gotta just
(Go)
Everything comes down the memories of
(You)
I kept it in without letting you
(Know)
I let you go so get away from
(Me)
Give me my space back you gotta just
(Go)
Everything comes down the memories of
(You)
I kept it in without letting you
(Know)
I let you go

(And then you've become a part of me)
(You'll always be right here)
(You've become a part of me)
(You'll always be my fear)
(I can't separate)
(Myself from what I've done)
(Giving up a part of me)
(I've let myself become you)
(I've let myself become you)
(I've let myself become)
(lost inside these thoughts of you)

(giving up a part of me)
(I've let myself become you)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Linkin Park's Figure. 09 express the pain and regret of holding onto negative experiences and allowing them to become a part of one's identity. The singer can't stop the flood of thoughts related to the pain, and even wonders why it's happening. This person takes the pain they were given and puts it on display, but instead of letting it go, they internalize it and let it consume them. The pain becomes a part of them, and the memories associated with it become inseparable.

The repetition of "never goes away" reinforces the idea that the pain and memories are always present and can't be escaped from easily. The singer has let the other person become a permanent fixture in their life, as the pain and memories associated with them have fused with their identity. Even when the singer tries to separate themselves from the pain and the other person, they find themselves lost in their thoughts, unable to let go.

Overall, Figure. 09 is a powerful song about the danger of holding onto negative experiences and allowing them to define oneself. It reminds us that sometimes, the only way to move forward is to let go and allow ourselves to heal.

That opening chorus chord is actually my favorite chord of all time, 0-0-4 in drop tuning, sounds even nicer when you're in DADGAD tuning and you just hit all the strings open except you hold that 4th fret on the 4th string.
