i think that was Sokka's final battle, he face the younger more agile Zaheer and despite taking some damage he managed to defeat him, after that he named Korra's dad as his successor for his great show of courage in the fight. I imagine his last moments were peaceful with all his remaining friends and family around him as he made a final joke before his passing.

The battle with Zaheer probably dealt ever lasting damage to Sokka, maybe he survives the battle but dies shortly after, Zaheer likely was capable of submission maneuvers on Sokka so the likelyhood of Sokka being crippled from the battle is high.

I always headcanoned that Kya's hatred towards Zaheer and aggressiveness (she was normally very hippy and even against Ming Hua she wasn't nearly as aggressive) was cause Zaheer killed Sokka, her uncle. I kind of fooled myself into thinking it was canon.

I personally think Gazan killed sokka. He had gone up against combustion benders and strong water benders before however he had likely never seen magma bending before.

Sokka has always used his intelligence, experience and problem solving skills to fight but being surprised with literal lava could do it.

Sokka sacrificing himself to keep Korra, the spiritual descendant and reincarnation of his best friend and brother-in-law is definitely within his character. We've seen Sokka willingly sacrifice himself for those he cares about. Toph during the Final Battle example.

Sokka dieing protecting Korra would be a fitting end for him. He fought by Aang's side and was instrumental in the administration of republic city after it was formed. After his brother in law died he would want to see Aang's legacy continue as he was reincarnated into Korra.

While this sounds plausible it can't be for certain. The scars Zaheer have on him appear to be caused by his rescue of P'Li from the Warlord. In the Season 3 Art Book Ancillary Art there are multiple images of Zaheer when he was much younger and he had scars that appear similar to the ones we see in Season 3 of The Legend of Korra. But of course most of the images are fanmade and picked by the creators to add. So his Sokka scarring him with his boomerang probably did not happen. But then again Zaheer has multiple scars so they could be from the same event or different events. Hmm very interesting the series just glossed over his demise almost nonchalantly. We need solid answers!

Eh, Sokka might not have necessarily died specifically by Zaheer's hands in that fight, though I do agree there's a good chance it still happened in the heat of that battle. He could've also been caught by a stray attack from one of the other Red Lotus members.

Personally I would find it better if imprisoning the Red Lotus was Sokkas last big victory and he died sometimes later in retirement from old age (maybe around the time Kora was ten or so, this would give a 7 to 8 year time window between his death and Korra's fire banding test and 5 to 6 years after the battle with the Red Lotus). My assumption is that he had a fine but child free marriage with Suki.

The chief of the Southern Water Tribe was still Unalaq. The Southern Water Tribe was ruled by the chief of the Northern Water Tribe and didn't became independent up until the end of Season 2, so the idea of Sokka was the chief of South is insane.

Sokka was chief of the south as his father (Hakoda) was chief. Sokka probably died when Korra was 4/5. That's when The Red Lotus first tried to kidnap her, as staed in the show.

We really can't invent theories from scratch and then wait for directors to confirm them in canon. I doubt that Sokka and the Red Lotus will be mentioned in the new Earth Avatar series, and I also doubt the comics will go that far. We don't know what happened to Azula and Suki either but I don't see anyone coming up with conspiracy theories about their violent death. We know Sokka died aged between 74 and 86. Perfectly old for him to retire and die of old age.

I get not using the world killed or death or murder. Etc. but they count have still confirmed this by saying this was Sokka’s last battle or something along the lines of we lost Sokka that day. They could have said that and let imaginations roll. I honestly don’t think Sokka died then. I think it was at a later date cause why not confirm it with different words if Sokka did die. Why leave it a mystery? We know he died just not how. Something else seems to be planned out. Some other reveal somewhere.

So, Sokka died sometime between 158 and 170 AG, and the cause of death is believed to be natural, as he would've been between 74-86 years old. The lack of concrete information on Sokka's death is the direct result of his limited role in The Legend of Korra

I think that also why Kitara move away from the city since probabaly most of the city was develop by Sokka so it kind of hard memory for her i still think it would make sense sokka died in combat taking out the red lotus and took over as water representative of the south when aang died and all of them retired with Toph going and founding the iron clan and sokka returning to the southern water tribe and was probabaly elected as the new leader after his and kitara father pass away while also becoming the gurdian of korra as a child

They kinda tell you that he’s killed by the red lotus. I’m not a huge legend of Korra fan but Atla was awesome. And obviously if it wasn’t Zahir, it had to be his girlfriend, Sparkysparkyboomwoman. That was in Sokka’s honor. 😂 Either way, he died protecting his friend and brother-in-law, even if Aang was no longer Aang. I respect him for that, and his death, however it may have happened, is a tragedy in my opinion.

Btw for anyone wondering this will be a huge spoiler to what actually happened to Sokka, Sokka only fought with the Red Lotus once to protect Korra as a child but it was actually Unalaq that killed Sokka (long story short Unalaq worked with the red lotus to capture Korra at a young age) I believe Sokka had suspicions and went to investigate his home where he found a secret behind a bookcase and found red lotus gear, that’s when Unalaq struck and gave Sokka a “heart attack” put him back in his bed to make it look like he died in his sleep. So yeah Unalaq deserved everything he got 👍🏻

Theirs is another Theory that poses the question of if Zaheer was a airbender prior. No confirmation but this theory basically states Zaheer was Aang orginal eldest who after going rogue was stripped of his bending which was why he hated the Avatar so much. Also why he was able to lead the red lotus which is a group of former white lotus who got pissed at them catering to Aang. Also explains why he has so knowledge of the air bender dispite their history being wiped. It’s also believed the Harmonic convergence didint create new airbenders but instead open latent genes in descendants of the airbenders who died off or hadn’t got the bending gene from there ancestors in the first place like Bumi.

Sorry, but there are a lot of logical leaps that aren't supported by evidence, not saying the theory is necessarily wrong, because there is no evidence that disproves it either.
First, just because Tonraq was a respected Chief during Korra doesn't mean it had to have happened right after Sokka's death. There was at least a decade between then and the events of the Red Lotus' return, Sokka could've died in office of old age (in 70's at that point) or retired and Tonraq was selected as the new Chief. There are many ways to earn the respect of your people as a leader; the Southern Water Tribe seemed to have progressed economically and if he kept that going or improved it that would do it. Not to mention he was a powerful water bending master and the father of the avatar.
It's possible that Sokka, being the smart one of the group, was the one who devised the prisons for them, just as much evidence of that as there is for Zaheer killing him. To do that he would've had to survived (I doubt they had time to plan for containment while dealing with a kidnapping of the Avatar crisis.
Also, they talked about killing the Fire Lord in the previous series, they didn't say the words but they showed Zaheer suffocate the Earth Queen, Amon's death (the exact moment from a distance) and Pei Lee was shown the moment before. Oh, not to mention that they covered the topic of a genocide in the previous series and Amon talked about killing the last of the air benders in season 1. Also the back stories of Mako/Bolin's parents and Asami's mother, them being killed (I don't remember the language used but it was obvious what happened) That I believe is the weakest reasoning in this video.
So like I said, it's ok to believe in this theory, it's even possible it ends up being true, but nothing in this video really serves as evidence, rather speculation, which you can do about any scenario that isn't explicitly stated or at least inferred.

How did Sokka get killed by Zaheer? Airbending is no way, and Zaheer was trapped for 13 Years in that cell. Did he got earlyer out and got Sokka? But with what then? Zaheer could only Airbend in The Legends of Korra when Sokka was already dead.?
