Swing Is Here
Lionel Hampton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's very clear, our love is here to stay
Not for a year but ever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go

But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long, long way
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble

They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

Overall Meaning

Lionel Hampton's song "Love Is Here To Stay" expresses the feeling of true love that lasts forever. The lyrics are simple yet profound, starting with the lines "It's very clear, our love is here to stay. Not for a year, but ever and a day." The song speaks to the universality of love and its endurance over time.

As the song progresses, Hampton juxtaposes the fleeting nature of popular culture - such as the radio, telephone, and movies - with the unchanging nature of true love. He acknowledges that these things may come and go, but true love remains constant. The lyrics "But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay. Together we're going a long, long way," further emphasize the depth of the love that is being sung about.

The final lines of the song, "In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble, they're only made of clay, but our love is here to stay," shows the singer's deep conviction in the immortality of love. The use of the metaphor of crumbling monuments serves to underscore this point.

Overall, Lionel Hampton's song "Love Is Here To Stay" speaks to the universal human desire for lasting love and the belief that such a love is possible.

Thanks for including Lionel Hampton in the title--he's the reason I watched this video, lol.  He was always an unparalleled, over-the-top showman drummer, besides being possibly the most talented! Also, I recognize one of the actors; he was a regular Columbia cast member on many Three Stooges shorts in the 1930s onward.

The first tune heard in the clip is "Broken Up Tune" from the RKO film "Street Girl."

Knowing who the audience for this stuff mostly is today, I don't think anybody has any problem with it! ;)

Jane Green did the vocal dub.

Aren't both "Street Girl" and "The Delightful Rogue" technically RADIO Pictures?

Alan De Souza Cruz

Young Lionel Hampton play drums

Jim Jasion

Doesn't RKO realize that that they could make some money in releasing the whole film?

Herbert Barbage

I know the old "RKO" door is still over at Paramount, but is RKO still in Biz?
