Lucy
Lionel Richie/The Commodores Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Lucy why don't you come and settle down
I hear you're the baddest girl this side of town
Got a little money that I wanna spend
If you'll be my friend
For just a little while

First summer you sailed on down to New Orleans
I was a victor, you were a Cajun queen
You had many fellas with lots of style
And you drove them wild
Oh little Lucy I had to be with you

Traveled around the country
Oh and I made my way
I never once forgot what I felt that day
Now I think I'm ready to play my hand
I wanna be your man which is hard to do
Oh Lucy I'm so in love with you

I've been a wandering man for such a long time
Now I know just where I'm going
Oh how I need you to stand by my side
Don't you go away
Cause I'm so in love with you

I've been searchin' for you Lucy for such a long time
Now I wanna let you know what I have on my mind
You've been around a lonely man
A lonely man
I've been a lonely man
Lucy
I don't want to live my life without you
There were times when I tried to get you off my mind girl
You're the girl of my dreams
Oh you're the girl of my dreams
Lucy
(Ahh my Lucy)

So many lonely nights I need you girl
(Ahh my Lucy)

Overall Meaning

The song "Lucy" by Lionel Richie is about a man who has been wandering around the country for a long time, and finally settles down in a town and meets a woman named Lucy. He is instantly struck by her beauty and personality, and despite her reputation as the "baddest girl this side of town," he wants to be with her. The first verse talks about how he has some money he wants to spend and if she will be his friend for just a little while. The lyrics to this song tell a beautiful story about two people who are meant to be together, despite their different backgrounds and reputations. Lionel Richie's smooth, soulful voice and the catchy melody of the song make it a classic love song that is still loved today. The song also speaks to the idea that sometimes love can be found in unexpected places, and it is worth taking a chance on someone even if they don't fit the mold of what society deems as "perfect."

I loved this song so much I called my daughter Lucy. I remember sitting in a wine bar in Canary wharf in London when I was 6 month’s pregnant and knowing it had to be her name.

Songs like this....and musically multi-talented groups like this....are becoming extinct maybe. A white teen of the 80's, I clung to such emotionally-charged, soulful ballads ( "slow songs" as we called them then); and they transport me back when i play those fine, old LP's now. They remind me of innocent, nervous times when asking a girl out was something. When dancing was moving to the groove, and smiling face-to face with a pure babydoll.....not the shallow grinding i see today. Those days--and their songs---- will always be special.
