Hailing from Tallahasee, Florida, Lipona is a skate punk quartet that specializes in a fast tempo blend of melodic hardcore, ambient, and post-hardcore music. Networks is the follow-up to Lipona’s critically acclaimed 2009 EP, Pigeonholed (available for free download), as well as the band’s debut long-player, Atlas (2008). While previous releases have been outward-looking and pseudo-philosophical, Networks finds the four piece treading more personal waters, such as coping with loss and the delicate balance of musical ambition with the transition into adulthood.
Lipona’s sound, however, remains firmly anchored in the technically precise, fiery punk rock that first attracted us to the Florida quartet nearly four years ago. Scorching riffs and a pummeling rhythm section remind the listener that thrash-y, hardcore-inspired skatepunk is alive and well, yet front man Yamil Velez’s vocals soar through shimmering choruses and introspective instrumental passages. Perhaps Lipona’s most noteworthy attribute is its ability to temper the relentless, forward-moving attack with a seemingly unending infusion of melody and atmosphere. Simply put, Networks is the continuing evolution of Lipona’s inspiring, progressive hybrid-punk sound.
Songs from Networks can be streamed on their Bandcamp.

Lipona Lyrics

Her daughter cries from what she's seen
The failure of a system
This war of ideologies
Has gone far past it's limit
Listen, we'll shoulder all the blame
They rely on the market expecting you to subsist
How can we ignore the necessity, the necessity of life
Why can we justify our apathy, our apathy it thrives
When will we stop our complacency?
Whenever it feels right
And time and time again, we're forced to make decisions
And time and time again, we're guilty by association
Are we getting what we're paying for
or have we been deceived?
Are we really blind to all of this?
It makes no sense but we are
Ignorant, indeed
The lyrics of Lipona's song "Hawks" delve into issues of social and political injustice, specifically the failings of healthcare system. The song references a woman who has died, and her daughter's grief. The lyrics speak to the frustrating nature of societal systems that ignore the needs of ordinary people, instead focusing on profit and ideology. Lipona suggests that it's time to take responsibility, and help shoulder the blame for these systemic issues.
The line "They rely on the market expecting you to subsist" highlights the way that our capitalist system prioritizes profit over the needs of individuals. The song goes on to mention the "disposable income and medical bills" that people are expected to cope with. The question "Are we getting what we're paying for or have we been deceived?" suggests a sense of disillusionment and betrayal towards a system that doesn't seem to be fulfilling its promises.
Lipona's chorus emphasizes the need for action, for people to stop being complacent and justify their apathy. The line "And time and time again, we're guilty by association" further underscores the sense of responsibility that we all share when we live within and contribute to a broken system. The song's closing line, "Ignorant, indeed," serves as a call to action - a recognition that we must be informed and engaged if we want to see real change.

This is super sick. This band hits my speakers at least once a day. They motivate me to try new things musically and expand what I consider punk music to be. You did a really good job on this cover. I'm impressed.

Hey Alessandro! We miss you around there. I'm afraid I can't send you a MIDI file; I recorded this on a Boss BR-1180 that burns straight to MP3. The patterns are programmed on an Alesis SR-16 but the sequencing and recording was done by me manually.

thanks a lot dude!

Hey napalm, I don't know if you remember me, Alessandro from the skatepunkers forum, from Perú. If you want your drums to sound more realistic, send me an inbox with the link to the midi file and I'll resend you a high quality mp3 with the drums.
