Formed in 1999, the band has four members: Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet. There is no lead singer in the band; instead, they trade lead vocal duties as well as rely on the harmonies of the four members.
Little Big Town's self-titled 2002 debut for Sony's Monument Records was panned critically and did not sell commercially. The album had only one minor hit single, "Don't Waste My Time," and it wasn't long before Little Big Town was dropped from the label.
Little Big Town resurfaced on the Equity Music Group label (formed by country singer Clint Black), and on October 4, 2005, released their second album, The Road to Here. The new album was well-received critically, and spawned the smash hit single "Boondocks." Three further singles were released from the album, including the Top 5 hit "Bring It on Home."
Their second album with the Equity label, A Place to Land, was released in 2007. Although, not long after its release, the label folded. Little Big Town then re-released the album a year later via Capitol Nashville. Two of the album's singles were minor Top 40 hits.
In 2010, the group returned with "Little White Church," the lead-off to their fourth studio album, The Reason Why, which was released on August 24, 2010.
Don't Die Young Don't Get Old
Little Big Town Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
But we're living on sweet dreams and neon signs
We can run but there ain't no escaping the trouble
It might get us in the end but it ain't gonna get us tonight
Hey, gonna shine like gold
Take every turn on the winding road
Give me your hand, baby, don't let go
Don't die young, don't get old
Keep every promise and hold on till forever
Keep stealing my heart like we ain't on borrowed time
Not a thing in the world that we can't make it through together
So, even if tomorrow gives us a mountain to climb, mountain to climb
I say
Hey, gonna shine like gold
Take every turn on the winding road
Give me your hand, baby, don't let go
Don't die young, don't get old
Don't die young, don't get old
When the stars in the sky shine, their heavenly light on the river
I'll stand by your side, even if the water is cold
And we'll shine like gold, shine like gold
Even in the dark, gonna shine like gold
Shine like gold, shine like gold
Even when we're old, gonna shine like gold
Hey, gonna shine like gold
Take every turn on the winding road
Give me your hand, baby, don't let go
Don't die young, don't get old
Don't die young, don't get old
Don't get old
Hey, gonna shine like gold
Take every turn on the winding road
Little Big Town's song "Don't Die Young Don't Get Old" is a powerful anthem that celebrates the resilience and determination to live life to the fullest despite the challenges and uncertainties that come our way. The lyrics convey a sense of embracing the present moment and not letting fear or adversity hold us back.
The song begins by acknowledging the common saying that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but rather than focusing on that distant hope, the band emphasizes the importance of living in the here and now, fueled by dreams and the vibrancy of neon signs. It acknowledges that trouble may be inevitable, but it encourages listeners to defy the odds and not let it consume or defeat them. The repetition of the line "Don't die young, don't get old" serves as a powerful reminder to seize each day and live with passion and vitality.
The chorus reinforces the theme of embracing the present and cherishing the love and connection between individuals. It urges for a commitment to keeping promises and holding onto each other, even in the face of borrowed time. It emphasizes that together, there is no obstacle too great and no challenge that can't be overcome. The lyrics paint a picture of unwavering support and love, promising to stand by each other's side and shine like gold.
