City
Lo-Fi-Fnk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tired of living this country life
It's time to move up from the south
It seemed to have something for us
But now it's time to hit the bus
60 miles of where it's at
To finally get things back on track
So c'mon boy just take us home
To the city, that's where we belong

Things have changed but still the same
Like bars and crowds with different names
24 hour grocery stores
Where the kids hang out just like before
Is this the place that we are sure
Could be Paris, London or Tokyo
Boy it's great to be back home
The city that's where we belong

Boy it's great to be back home
The city that's where we belong
The city that's where we belong

We need excitement for a change
But that doesn't mean that we will stay
The beginning feels like oh so great
But soon it turns to just okay
See, I've known this place for much too long
I'm always the one to be moving on

But still it's great to be back home
The city that's where we belong

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lo-Fi-Fnk's song "City" is a story of a couple who decided to leave their country life to settle in the city. They feel like the city has so much to offer, and they are eager to explore it. The couple is tired of their mundane lives and wants to experience excitement in the city. They cannot wait to get on the bus and move 60 miles away from their old lives. They believe that the city is where they belong because it is where everything happens. Bars and stores are open all hours, and there are plenty of activities for the youth to enjoy.

Once they arrive in the city, they recognize everything but feel like it has all changed. The bars and stores have different names, but the kids still hang out at the 24-hour grocery stores. The couple contemplates whether the city is what they were expecting? They realize that it could be any other city, like Paris, London, or Tokyo. But regardless, they are thrilled to be back home. The chorus's repetition of "the city that's where we belong" highlights that the city is where they feel like they can finally be themselves.

The last verse takes a different turn, where the couple realizes that they cannot stay in the city forever. While they crave the excitement of the city, they don't see themselves settling down here. The beginning of the song felt like a dream come true, but soon they've come to terms with the reality of the city. Although the singer has known the city for a long time, they are always the ones who want to move on. However, the chorus at the end of the song reinforces that the city has a special place in their hearts, and they will always love it.

@oldcmputer

This song is so much better than the original and so hard to find...

@camerontaylor7471

100% I’ve realized that for a long long time now... I have the original in my music library and I have made a mental note in my head to go onto YouTube and play the remix whenever I the original is playing... even though they actually sound very similar! The tempo and rhythm are virtually unchanged...

@mackenziecolby483

@francinefernandes4988

I agree. The teenagers is soooo cool ;)

@dennisburns2002

You think that's hard. Try finding The Teenagers - Demo Album. I downloaded it before their debut came out. My old computer died and I can't find their oldest stuff, which is their best, surprise surprise
