Homing
Loma Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A shiver in the air
Raises the morning
The silence of the house
Presence unfolding
Splinter in your eye
Black dog of silence
The pallor of the moon
Shimmer of mercy
The turning of the night
Flashes a warning
A fire on the ridge
Black cloud adorning
All the faces come to life
Memory, longing
Opening the palms
Endlessly wanting
You are ever in my mind
(Turn the signal way, way down)
Holding the silence
Dog out in the sun
(Isolate the only sound)
Endlessly roaming
The swelling of the wind
(I am somewhere that you know)
Lifting the awnings
Kindling the sun
(And you slowly recognize)
Endlessly speaking
Isolate the sound
(I am back again to stay)
That sends you homing
I am calling from a room
Tired of talking

I am right behind your eyes
I am right behind your eyes
I am right behind your eyes

I am right behind your eyes
I am right behind your eyes

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Loma's song "Homing" sets the mood for a mysterious and eerie experience. The singer sings of a shiver in the air that signals the start of the day, but something is not quite right. The silence in the house is unnerving and seems to be hinting at something hidden. The image of a splinter in one's eye hints at a feeling of discomfort or pain, perhaps a premonition of something unpleasant to come. The black dog of silence, along with the pallor of the moon, furthers the feeling of unease in the air as the turning of the night flashes a warning. The singer observes, with a sense of melancholy, a fire on the ridge and all the faces come to life, suggesting a revival of memories and longing.

In the second stanza, the singer turns inward, exploring their thoughts and emotions. They express their desire, opening their palms endlessly wanting. The object of their longing is constantly on their mind, as if they couldn't shake off the thought. The chorus acts as a bridge to the next stanza, bringing back the image of silence and isolation. The imagery of a dog out in the sun, endlessly roaming and the swelling of the wind lifting the awnings, furthers the sense of isolation and solitude. The singer wants to isolate a sound that sends them homing, suggesting that they are searching for something familiar, a sense of belonging. The final stanza reveals the singer calling from a room, tired of talking. The repetition of the phrase "I am right behind your eyes" in a monotone voice adds to the sense of eeriness and mystery that surrounds the song.

Or, perhaps it was a reconnaissance trip, to plan LOMA's stadium gig, utilising Stonehenge as the perfect backdrop? 😃
