Long John Baldry Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I got my mojo working, but it just don't work on you
I want to love you so bad, 'till I just don't know what to do
I'm going down to Louisiana, to get me a mojo hand
I'm going down to Louisiana, to get me a mojo hand
I'm gonna have all you women, get you under my command
Got my mojo working
I got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
I got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
I got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
But it just don't work on me
I got a gypsy woman giving me advice
I got a gypsy woman giving me advice
I got a whole lot of tricks keeping here on ice
I got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
I got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
I got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
I got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
But it just don't work on me
In “Got My Mojo Working,” Long John Baldry is singing about his inability to make someone fall in love with him, despite his efforts. He sings, “I got my mojo working, but it just don't work on you,” conveying the idea that he has tried all his tricks, but they still don't work on this particular woman. In the second verse, he says that he's heading down to Louisiana to get himself a mojo hand, which is a reference to a spiritual/ magical talisman believed to have the power to bring good luck or protection to the owner. It is said that owning a mojo hand can help you achieve your goals, win at gambling or attract love.
The song features a lot of repetition and chanting of the phrase “I got my mojo working,” which represents an attempt to convince himself and others that he has all the necessary tools to make the object of his affection fall in love with him. He also talks about a gypsy woman who gives him advice and a lot of tricks that he has up his sleeve, but all these efforts still don't seem to work on this particular woman.
In summary, “Got My Mojo Working” is a song about wanting love so badly that you're willing to do anything to get it. Despite all the efforts that Long John Baldry has made to make this particular woman fall in love with him, he still can't. The song becomes a shoutout to the power of the mojo hand and the tricks that he has up his sleeve, both of which he hopes will help break the spell that seems to be stopping him from getting the love he desires.

There were a few reasons why. The blues revival was big in England but didn’t catch on in the USA until Cream came over in ‘66-‘67 and Long John’s style was seen as old fashioned. According to Rod Stewart, John was offered a tour with the Animals but in his words “America’s not ready for the likes of me” which could also have been a subtle way of saying a gay blues singer wouldn’t go over well in middle America

Long John Baldry just had one of those voices that was nothing like anybody else's, like Leon Russell. The closest I can come to describing his voice is some sort of hybrid of Otis Redding and Robin Gibb.

Long John is sooooo very cool. Met him one evening beside the stage at break time, he looked down at me (yup, down....he's not called Long John for nothing... 6 foot 5 I think) and said: "little girl, you're cute, I like to watch you dance". :) That was in 1990 in Ontario at a small venue, intimate setting. What a guy!

Eve Pankovitch I met him at a small bar in Gas Town late 70’s. He was very tall and a complete gentlemen. We enjoyed his music.
