THIS FIRE
by Lori McKenna

I thought he'd love me forever
How forever is easily said
Oh, how love is like liquid
Liquid over my head.
All I wanted was to love him
So I gave him my heart.
The first thing I learned about love is
Things break when you tear them apart.

Will you love me when I'm angry
Will you bring me my spirit when my soul is dry
Will you give me your forever
Will you lay down in this fire?

So my dear are you lonely?
Or are you just the lonely type?
The ones who cry with their lovers
The kind who love out of spite.

Will you love me when I'm angry
Will you bring me my spirit when my soul is dry
Will you give me your forever
Will you lay down in this fire?

I'm not going to ever take away
From the person you're trying to be
So you can stay right there inside yourself
I know everyone wants to be free
On the night my lover left me
I did not beg his stay
Watched a paper bag trying to jump a chainlink fence
And I knew he was just blowing away

Will you love me when I'm angry

Will you bring me my spirit when my soul is dry
Will you give me your forever

Overall Meaning

Lori McKenna’s song ‘This Fire’ is a poignant reflection on the nature of love and the agony of heartbreak. In the opening verse, she admits that she thought her love would last forever, but quickly acknowledges how easily the word ‘forever’ is spoken. She compares love to liquid that engulfs her completely, leaving her underwater and struggling to breathe. Despite her fears and doubts, all she wants is for her love to be reciprocated. The next line, however, reflects on the harsh reality of love and how it can shatter when torn apart.

McKenna asks her lover if he will love her even when she’s angry or when her soul is dry, indicating her struggles with emotional stability. She then asks him to give her his forever but wonders if he will be willing to lay down in the fire that seems to envelop her life. She questions whether he is lonely or the lonely type, who cries with their lovers and loves out of spite. Through these lines, it is clear that she’s trying to understand and come to terms with the pain and conflict that exists within her relationship.

Towards the end of the song, McKenna accepts the reality of their love and how it has become unsustainable. She acknowledges that she won’t try to change him or take away from the person he’s trying to be. Instead, she urges him to continue to be himself and asserts that everyone wants to be free. She then reveals that when her lover left her, she watched a paper bag trying to jump a chain-link fence and knew that he too was just blowing away. Ultimately, ‘This Fire’ is a song that captures the raw emotions of heartbreak and how love can burn so fiercely that it leaves us struggling to find our way out.
