Stay With Me
Lorraine Ellison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where did you go when things went wrong baby?
Who did you run to
And find a shoulder to lay your head upon?
Baby wasn't I there?
Didn't I take good care of ou?
No no, I can't believe you're leaving me
Stay with me baby
Please, stay with me baby
Ooh, stay with me baby
I can't go on
Who did you touch when you needed tenderness?

I gave you so much
And in return I found happiness
Baby what did I do
Maybe, maybe I was too good, too good to you
No no, I can't believe you're leaving me
Stay with me baby
Ooh, stay with me baby
Ooh, please stay with me baby
Remember you said you'd always gonna need me

Remember you said you'd never ever leave me
Remember, remember, I'm asking you, begging you, ooh, ooh
Stay with me baby,
Please please stay with me baby
Stay with me baby
I can't go on
Ooh stay with me baby

I'm begging you, stay with me baby
Stay, stay, stay with me baby...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lorraine Ellison’s “Stay with Me” speak of a woman pleading with her lover to stay with her, questioning where he went when things went wrong and needing him to help her find the tenderness she once gave him. The song’s opening lines set the tone for the rest of the track. The singer uses a series of questions to express her feelings of betrayal and abandonment towards her lover. The repetition of “Who did you run to/ And find a shoulder to lay your head upon?” speaks to the idea that she is hurt and questioning why he would leave when she was always there for him.

The singer then moves into the chorus, practically begging for him to stay with her. She needs him to be there for her and to help her feel loved again. The line “Maybe, maybe I was too good, too good to you” adds a layer of complexity to the situation. She wonders if perhaps she was too kind and doting and as a result, he took her for granted. This adds to the sense of emotional turmoil the singer is feeling, wondering what she could have done differently.

Overall, “Stay with Me” is a heartfelt plea for someone to stay through rough times, to be there for you when you need it the most. It speaks to the human need for love and tenderness, for someone to be there even when things get tough.

The original version...
I'd never heard it before this evening...
Genya Ravan's/Ten Wheel Drive's version is still my favorite, and Bette Midler's, from the movie, "The Rose," is very good (and I believe she OD's and dies while singing it, always a crowd-pleaser)...
But this one not only has soulfulness, it has...
Dignity.
(This masterpiece was created on 48 hours' notice after Sinatra canceled a recording date... and since they were going to have to pay for the musicians and studio time anyway, they used them for this.  Read the Wikipedia entry on this recording, it's quite interesting.)
I've said it before, elsewhere:
With the exception of George Gershwin, no white composer/songwriter has ever understood black music like Jerry Ragavoy.
(Interestingly, and not unimportantly, both are also Jewish.)

This song is so heart wrenchingly beautiful...the melody, the tempo, the instruments--especially that piano, the powerful simplicity of the lyrics and the way those words convey the yearning. And all of this coming together to lay the foundation for Ellison's magnificent voice. That voice grabs me by the throat, and listening I remember every hurt that came out of love letting me down.

This song was written 50 years ago but it seems as if it had been written yesterday. Great music is timeless

@Hampsonful
