Lorraine Ellison's full name is Marybelle Luraine Ellison Gonzalez-Keys (she was married twice) and was born and raised in Philadelphia.
Lorraine recorded with two gospel groups, the Ellison Singers and the Golden Chords, but left the latter in 1964 to pursue a solo career in R & B music.
She also sang with a group called the Sylvania Singers before forming the Ellison Singers.
'I Dig You Baby' (number 22 R & B) in 1965 was her first chart entry.
Lorraine signed with the Loma imprint, and had a fortunate break when Frank Sinatra cancelled a studio recording, leaving an orchestra with nothing to do.
She stood in at the last minute and recorded the Soul Classic, 'Stay With Me'.
'Stay With Me' (number 11 R & B, number 64 pop) in 1966 was the song that really took her to another level.
'Stay With Me' was written and produced by Jerry Ragovoy and really helped establish and imbed Soul Music within the music industry.
'Heart Be Still' (number 43 R & B, number 89 pop), followed in 1967.
Lorraine never charted again, however, she released 'Try Just A Little Bit Harder' in 1968, which rock singer Janis Joplin later remade with great success.
Her compositions, on which she often collaborated with her manager, Sam Bell (of Garnet Mimms And The Enchanters fame), were recorded by Howard Tate and Garnet Mimms.
Lorraine has a surviving daughter named Tonya A. Ellison-Veal.
There are 2 remaining members of the original Ellison singers still getting on with day to day things, (Pauline Ellison-King & Jean Ellison-Dennison).
Lorraine gave up the music business in order to take care of her ailing mother, singing mostly in the Beth-el Baptist and Christlike Baptist Church before her death in 1983 of ovarian cancer.

I'd never heard it before this evening...
Genya Ravan's/Ten Wheel Drive's version is still my favorite, and Bette Midler's, from the movie, "The Rose," is very good (and I believe she OD's and dies while singing it, always a crowd-pleaser)...
But this one not only has soulfulness, it has...
Dignity.
(This masterpiece was created on 48 hours' notice after Sinatra canceled a recording date... and since they were going to have to pay for the musicians and studio time anyway, they used them for this. Read the Wikipedia entry on this recording, it's quite interesting.)
I've said it before, elsewhere:
With the exception of George Gershwin, no white composer/songwriter has ever understood black music like Jerry Ragavoy.
(Interestingly, and not unimportantly, both are also Jewish.)

This song is so heart wrenchingly beautiful...the melody, the tempo, the instruments--especially that piano, the powerful simplicity of the lyrics and the way those words convey the yearning. And all of this coming together to lay the foundation for Ellison's magnificent voice. That voice grabs me by the throat, and listening I remember every hurt that came out of love letting me down.

I like to hear this original version from time to time just to remind me what it means to be human.
The passion and emotion given in her voice has rarely been equaled. Not that it has to be because not every singer is the same. Shakespeare once said "Use lessons marvel." I would say this version is probably the only exception to that rule. It is beyond mighty and gives me chills like no other and when I come to hear it again, it is always like the first time. Devastating!

One of the from that era and still powerful today. as a DJ in NYC at that time it was requested over and over-most of all when a couple was in love they wanted to dance or just hold each other as this played. Other versions were sometimes good but nothing touched this one by Ms. Ellison.

This largely ignored deep soul masterwork is among the most dramatic records of any genre ever released. Everyone from Ms. Ellison to Mr. Ragovoy and his symphony orchestra went for it like life itself depended on it. Bette Midler paid close attention and used it to stop her movie, "The Rose." A half century of stopped shows (even the song "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going") still pays testament to this record.

The absolute best ever version of this song. So far I've found over i/2 a dozen versions of this song and they all pale in comparison. Such a reading, the feeling she put into this song.. it just drives me wild with excitement every time i hear it... when she says "Remember..." she means it! Wow, such a powerful and soul touching song has so many opinions. For me, this is the original release of the song and it is delivered with such pain and sorrow. Makes me wonder what awful pain Lorraine Ellison drew upon to give such emotions in this song. Janis Joplin did a wonderful version of this song and gave it some blues. Then Bette Midler put her own touches on this song and gave it the masses in the brilliant movie The Rose.

Love this,but also love Steve Marriott's version.Though a rock singer,Steve was a real soul man,and it shows in many songs like this one and Black Coffee.Sadly,both died way too young.Steve was always respected and applauded as a great blues,soul,rock singer, a small man with a huge set of pipes.Lorraine was always awesome, but never got the public notice she deserved,most people have never heard of her,only we music lovers who treasure our old vinyl soul and blues albums. This single is expensive if you can find it,or the album.Its a treasure. Either way,don't try this song if you can't deliver,cause it takes a baddass voice to pull this one off. To me, Porchas voice was good
but lacked the passion of this version or Steve's, or Janis or Bettes.I would be really interested to hear Jerrys demo of it.

Lorrain is the Original. When Frank Sinatra canceled a recording session because he was sick. Being left with a 60 piece orchestra, Jerry Raganovy who wrote it (with George David Weiss) readapted and rearranged this song for that orchestra and Lorraine blew it apart. No one has ever came close to her. This was our Pop of the 1960s. Now they call us Boomers like its an insult, but man we had it all back when.

@@juepuctaGZ - Not sure about Sinatra recording the song but the orchestra was booked for him but he didn’t turn up. As the orchestra was paid for anyway, Jerry Ragovoy stepped in and recorded this masterpiece with Lorraine.
