Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.
A Blessing in Disguise
Lost Dogs Lyrics

Most times are tough
The going rough
Like there never was a master plan
Those steadfast doors don't open
And you pray, but you don't understand
You've gotta hold fast the hope that's in you
Sometimes it takes a long time to see it as a blessing in diguise
We live upon this dark surface
And God, He moves upon the deep
What is concealed will be revealed
There is no promise He won't keep
Still we're confused by the shadows
We're awake now, but we're half asleep
Sometimes the dark can move our hearts to long for the light of the sun
And our ways don't become His ways until we are undone
And after you've been broken
You may not realize that you are grace to the broken-hearted
And a blessing in disguise
The song “A Blessing in Disguise” by Lost Dogs is all about finding hope and faith in the midst of challenging times. The first stanza talks about how tough life can be, and how sometimes it feels like there is no plan in place, like a “master plan” is missing. This can be frustrating and disheartening, especially when doors seem to be closing, and praying doesn't seem to be enough. The song advises that during these times, one should trust the hope that is within themselves even if what they see doesn't necessarily align with that hope. The chorus encourages listeners to remember that it takes time to see challenges as blessings, but to have faith that eventually they will.
The next verse approaches the subject from a different angle, describing life as a “dark surface” over which God moves. The lyrics state that one should trust in the fact that what is concealed will be revealed, reminding us that we aren't always privy to knowing God's plan or what He's doing. This can be scary or confusing, especially when we are only partially awake to our surroundings. The verse concludes by stating that sometimes, the darkness can make us crave the light and long for the sun, leading us to travel new paths, ones that may not have been of our own choosing.
Finally, the song acknowledges the idea of being broken, which can happen when life doesn't go as planned. It suggests that once you are broken, you become a source of grace and a blessing to those who are also broken-hearted. The song ends on a hopeful note, as if the idea of being a blessing to others blunts the sting of life’s challenges, reframing them as lessons instead of curses.
