Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.
Get Me Ready
Lost Dogs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Get me ready for the money
The dirty bomb and the nuclear rocket
Get me ready for milk and honey
Get me ready for the Tribulation
Get me ready for the Rapture
For whatever evil situation
Get me ready for it
Get me ready for it
Get me ready for it
Get me ready for hate and love
For a devil or an angel
For the vulture or the holy dove
For the banquet or the empty table
For long life or early grave
For the cross or for the bliss
To be a free man or a shackled slave
For helping hands or the Judas kiss
Get me ready for it....
Get me ready for the signs and wonders
For the absence and the silence
For the sunshine or the rain and thunder
The age of peace or the times of violence
For doubt and faith, for fear and hope
For the curses and the blessings
Smooth sailing or the sinking boat
For the trials and the testings
Get me ready for the broken hearted
The down trodden, deaf, blind, dumb and lame
The growing numbers of friends departed
For those who love you
Or those who curse your name
Lord, get me ready to see your face
Or get me ready to face you
For your justice, love and infinite grace
Get me ready (for it)
Get me ready (for it)
Get me ready to embrace you
The Lost Dogs’ song Get Me Ready is a plea to be prepared for whatever comes next in life, whether it be good or bad. The lyrics express a desire to be ready for all eventualities, to be equipped to handle the trials and joys that will come along the way. The song begins with a plea to be ready for poverty or wealth, for destructive weapons or prosperity. This first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, as the lyrics delve into other dichotomies that exist in life, such as hate and love, faith and doubt, and peace and violence.
The song draws on biblical themes, referencing the Tribulation and the Rapture, two events commonly associated with end times theology in Christianity. The lyrics also touch on the idea of justice and grace that is central to Christian theology, asking to be ready to face the Lord and his infinite grace. This may be interpreted as a plea for spiritual readiness, as well as physical preparedness.
Overall, the song encourages listeners to be ready for whatever may come their way, to anticipate the ups and downs of life and be prepared to face them head on. The lyrics speak to the idea of embracing life fully, without fear or hesitation, and being open to all experiences, good or bad.
