Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.
Moses in the Desert
Lost Dogs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
From my friends I had to flee
Like Moses in the desert without a home or a country
Like Moses in the desert, the Word came down to me
"Your friends are blinded by a golden calf
And you must tell them
You must go and help them all to see"
He said, "I am that I Am"
I said, "What will I tell them?"
He said, "I am that I Am"
"But dear Lord, I just can't do it
I am just a man"
He said, "I will see you through it
I am that I Am"
I was like Moses in the desert
From my sin I had to run
Like Moses in the desert, I could not face what I'd become
Like Moses in the desert, I have a stuttering tongue
But my friends are blinded by another God
The Lord said, "Tell them
They will hear you
You're My chosen one"
The lyrics of the Lost Dogs song "Moses in the Desert" speak to the feelings of isolation and spiritual turmoil experienced by the singer, who sees himself as a modern-day Moses, forced to flee from his friends and his own sin in order to find a sense of purpose and direction. The song is built around the metaphor of Moses, a figure from biblical history who was called upon by God to lead the Israelites out of bondage and into the promised land. In this context, the singer's struggles can be seen as representative of the struggles of all who seek to find meaning and purpose in a confusing and uncertain world.
The first verse of the song sets up the metaphor of Moses in the desert, the biblical story in which Moses faces his own doubts and fears, but ultimately finds the strength to do God's will. Like Moses, the singer is called upon to help his friends see the error of their ways, but he feels powerless and unsure. In the second verse, the singer reflects on his own sin and his difficulties in communicating his message to others. Throughout the song, the figure of God provides strength and guidance to the singer, reassuring him that he is not alone and that he will be able to accomplish the difficult task that lies before him.
At its core, "Moses in the Desert" is a song about faith, doubt, and the human struggle to find meaning and direction in life. Through its powerful imagery and heartfelt lyrics, it speaks to the universal human experience of feeling lost, alone, and uncertain, and finding the courage to take that first step towards a brighter future.
