LOUDEN SWAIN
By Nick DeRiso
Fronted by lead singer and actor Rob Benedict, Louden Swain also includes bassist Mike Borja, lead guitarist Billy Moran and drummer Stephen Norton. The band has just released its fourth full-length recording – Eskimo, on their own 3 Car Wreckords label.
This fizzy amalgam of sound ties together a wide array of influences. Benedict and Borja, who formed the band in the late 90s, shared a background of indie/college rock legends like R.E.M., the Pixies, Pavement and the Replacements. The addition of Moran completed the band’s sound, as he and Norton brought in early musical influences from the hard rock/metal world – notably Kiss and Gun ’n Roses. The quartet’s common ground, early on, could be found in classic rock icons like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Who – and that provided additional spices in their melting pot of musical textures.
Louden Swain’s first album with Moran, 2009’s A Brand New Hurt, reflected the earliest flowerings of the band’s current sound, and began to rapidly expand its fanbase. In addition, Benedict’s connections to the acting world – he’s appeared on TV’s “Felicity,” “Alias” and “Supernatural” and films like “Waiting” have also attracted attention for the band. Recently they penned the tune “Help You” which was placed in the Jenna Fischer movie “A Little Help,” in which Benedict co-starred. A 2011 successful tour of Europe through England, Germany and Austria also brought Louden Swain to new audiences.
Louden Swain now aims to build on their already considerable momentum with the forthcoming Eskimo, which features 13 of their most polished songs to date. This time through they enlisted the help of several industry veterens--the album was mixed by Joe McGrath (Ryan Adams, Green Day, B.B. King), Mike Farrell (Morrissey, Macy Gray) guested on keyboards, and the finishing touches on the album were provided by the Grammy winning mastering of Gavin Lurssen.

The others never made it through the week
The lip is cold the body nearly frozen
So take a drink
Adhere yourself be patient and cross legged
Let me breath you in, resuscitate
Let me take your hands and say remember
Yesterday…
Baby, there's no denying
I'm still alive And I'm still trying
Hold you close late at night
When we reunite
You look the same, I know you're getting older
But god has been kind to your pretty face
Sometimes I like to think I never met you
Then it stings much less when you're away
You squeeze my hand and tell me to be stronger
Can't help but be embarrassed when you say
You always have to tell me to be someone, be someone, be someone
Baby, there's no denying
I'm still alive And I'm still trying
Hold you close late at night
When we reunite
Just you stop your crying
Look at me I'm holding tight
Hold you close late at night
When we Reunite
When we Reunite
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
Deep when we're alone
Deeper in my life
The lyrics of Louden Swain's song "Reunion" convey the feelings of reconnection, reminiscence and love. The first verse sets the tone for the song as it talks about the remnants of a wild week, with only one bottle left to drink. The person talking suggests that they take a drink and focus on the present moment, letting them breathe in and remember yesterday. The phrase "let me breath you in, resuscitate" seems powerful, and potentially indicates that the person had missed their lover's presence while they were apart, and being reunited with them is reviving them. The second verse hints at the separation they had endured, with the singer acknowledging their lover's ageing but saying that god has been kind to their face. There is also a thinking of protection in the line, "Sometimes I like to think I never met you/ Then it stings much less when you're away," revealing that the person is aware of the pain of separation and is already struggling to avoid it. The hand squeezing that follows, with the request to be stronger might indicate some sort of pain and hardship, but the embarrassment at being asked to be someone likely points to some sort of weakness or insecurity felt by the singer.
The chorus amplifies the connection felt between the couple, with the character shouting out in his or her life, of the importance of the other person. There is no denying that the person is still alive and trying, and being there at night to hold them is crucial. This lyric is repeated twice with the last one adding the "stop your crying" line. It is almost like a pep talk with an emphasis that they need to stop being hesitant, and that the characters' holding will help inspire strength. The repetitions of "Deep when we're alone; Deeper in my life" could indicate a close understanding of each other or 'getting to know' each other. Overall, the song appears to be a tribute to reconnection after a period of hardship or separation, with each verse serving as an extension of this theme.
