Jordan was one of the first black recording artists whose popularity crossed over into the mainstream white audience and who scored hits on both the "race" charts and the mainstream white pop charts. He is now acknowledged as one of the most successful African-American musicians of the 20th century, ranking fifth in the list of the all-time most successful black recording artists.
Jordan scored at least four million-selling hits during his career, regularly topping the "race" charts, as well as scoring simultaneous Top Ten hits on the white pop charts on several occasions. Many of the songs he wrote or co-wrote have become 20th century popular music classics.
With his dynamic Tympany Five bands (which also pioneered the use of electric guitar and electric organ) Jordan largely mapped out the main parameters of the classic R&B, urban blues and early rock'n'roll genres with a series of hugely influential 78 rpm discs for the Decca label that presaged virtually all of the dominant black music styles of the 1950s and 1960s and which exerted a huge influence on many leading performers in these genres.

Cooling out her boyfriend in very way
She kept on a-sking
Full of complaints
Like she expected folks to be saints
She insisted that he be me
So this was her complaint complete
(Report to the nation)
I like the dimple in your chin
I like the tricky way you grin
Still you ain't no kind of cat
(You know why don't you?)
Boy, your socks don't match!
Louis Jordan's song "Your Socks Don't Match" tells the story of a girl who is cooling out her boyfriend in a very casual way. She is constantly complaining and stating that he is not the kind of cat that she needs. She is insisting that he be like her, so that he can understand her expectations. She lists out the things that she likes about him, such as the dimple in his chin and the tricky way he grins, but she eventually comes to the conclusion that he does not match up to her expectations because his socks do not match.
The lyrics of "Your Socks Don't Match" reflect the society's tendency to look for perfection and conform to societal norms. The girl is unhappy with her boyfriend because of something as simple as his socks not matching. This shows how little things that do not matter in the larger scheme of things can be blown out of proportion and become a reason for someone's dissatisfaction in a relationship. The lyricist tries to portray how people may become unreasonable and have unrealistic expectations from their significant others.

I once checked in at work with two different socks. A good friend told me the mistake, and I answered him: "Yes - and I do have a matching pair at home!" - Now I can add this tune to my repertoire... :-)
