Landslide
Low Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Talk it out loud talk to myself
A stone in a cloud silence in hell

Look at the smile broken like teeth
Torn at the mouth loosing our feet
Caught in a landslide

Let it all out scream till you bleed
There’s no coming back the South China Sea

So, you call me brother sister, I plea

Out of our minds and out of our league
Call it a landslide

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Landslide" by Low tell a tale of desperation and an overwhelming sense of chaos. The opening lines, "Talk it out loud talk to myself, A stone in a cloud silence in hell," depict a solitary struggle, where one is left to grapple with their thoughts and emotions alone. The metaphor of a stone in a cloud represents feeling trapped and isolated in a chaotic and unsettling situation. The silence in hell further emphasizes the overwhelming sense of despair and hopelessness.

The next lines, "Look at the smile broken like teeth, Torn at the mouth losing our feet," paint a vivid picture of brokenness and vulnerability. The smile, typically a symbol of happiness, is shattered and fragmented, much like broken teeth. This imagery is used to convey the pain and hardship experienced. The line "Torn at the mouth losing our feet" suggests a loss of stability and control, as if the individual is falling apart or losing their footing in the face of adversity.

The repeated reference to a landslide serves as a metaphorical representation of a significant and irreparable shift in circumstances. It implies that whatever situation they are facing has reached a point of no return, where the individual is caught in the chaos and destruction of this metaphorical landslide. The intensity of the lyrics and the plea to let it all out and scream till you bleed highlights the desperation and urgency felt. The mention of the South China Sea further adds to the vastness and uncontainable nature of the turmoil they find themselves in.

This was my introduction to Low. It played on a local radio station while I drove home from work one day.

I was WHAT IS THIS!!??

@krahmiin

I used to dislike the ending to this song, always felt like it went on too long. These past few days it feels too short. I guess you never really know how much something means to you until it's gone. You truly were God's gift to this earth and taken much too soon.

I live in one of those bits of semi rural England where every village has a generic 1980s built estate of homes where people are crammed into little boxes with postage stamp sized yards yet everyone owns a very noisy electric grass mower . playing this conjures up That image of Absolute Space - the Open Sky , Rusty Grain Silos ,Barns & the dead Straight Fenceless Road which disappears towards the Hills probably 70 miles away …Wonderful 😃

Devastatingly good. I was lucky enough to see them play this live in Glasgow a few years ago, and the audience were just blown away by the beauty and power of this song.
