The city of Beavercreek fought the the Crawford family and spent hundreds of thousands doing so, the ultimately came to a settlement after 6 years for $1.7 million in the wrongful death suit against them. The shooting was considered "justified".

Definitely not feeling them. If it’s a justified shooting it’s just a waste of time, however if the officer(s) end up being charged then I’m onboard 100%. There’s literally no drama or anything criminally interesting if they aren’t charged. We’re hear for the drama and it’s just boring if the officer isn’t charged. Because they’re treated with baby gloves there’s no intensity. 👎

There were many pushing to press charges against him, but nothing ever came of it... I agree, though. They said there was no way to prove he was giving a false report based on the phone call and footage so nothing could be done.

"murdering this poor young man" that's rich. If you point anything that looks like a firearm at anyone the most likely outcome will involve a coroner. If dispatch states "pointing a firearm", that is a problem that needs to be removed by any means necessary to preserve the lives of innocent customers and LE. Take down JUSTIFIED!!!!

The interrogator is trying to feed the officer the answers. This is especially true when discussing him not shooting again for the second incident. At first the officer said he collapsed before reaching the rifle. The second time he changed his story saying he hesitated before reaching the weapon and "went down" either on his own or bc he told him to. He keeps using the excuse that his ears were ringing and couldn't hear what the dead man was yelling.

The pellet rifle should have been immediately moved away from the scene by sliding it away by foot or whatever thus eliminating the possibility of the subject reaching it, after having been fatally shot.

It is so wonderful seeing cops being thoroughly interrogated more often now…I respect cops after all they are technically our public protectors…but of course many of them are corrupt or just way too trigger happy and get away with murder. I live in the South and we have some extremely corrupt cops…not long ago one of our entire cities the FBI shut down the whole police force and every single cop in this particular unit were actually murdering drug dealers…then selling the drugs collected from evidence and were making 100’s of thousands of dollars each for years.
As of now State Troopers have all taken over this particular police unit and I have never felt so safe at night as I do now.
Also…it is an ultimate relief no longer getting speeding tickets for going the speed limit.

Update: I just now read this officer is back in duty. This p1sses me off.

I watched this interview yesterday and commented on what I heard, I'm actually surprised because I was taught believe nothing you hear and of what you see. My comment was for the cops, afterwards I was sent the video and the 911 call. I watched and was shocked at how much the video and the cops statement contradicted one another. I found that the cops didn't give the guy a chance! It sounded like as soon as the guy was given an order he was shot. I also didn't know at the time that in Ohio it's legal to carry a gun in full view and that makes a huge difference! So this guy could have walked in carrying a gun. Another thing that changed my mind was listening to the 911 call while watching the video. The caller obviously lied! The guy never pointed the gun, was never threatening and never tried to load it. I hope the caller feels guilty but I doubt it because when the guy gets shot he only sounds satisfied and not shocked or sad that someone just lost their life based on his lies!!!! So very sad!!

Walmart employees should have training. The young man should have been charged for repeated false information to the police department and what other laws he broke. No way should he get away with this murder which could have been prevented by simply making an honest call of concern not lies! Condolences to Mama and family.

I can't speak to the details of this case, but I am a CIty Manager and we often end up settling cases we really feel shouldn't be settled, but at some point the cost of legal fees and the use of city resources to continue defending a case are going to be much higher than a settlement. This always turns my stomach. Take a simple slip and fall case where someone claims the slipped on a cracked sidewalk and got hurt. They find some ridiculous who will say their back us permanently injured and they can no longer work, and some law firm is billing at $400 per hour for endless hours. Before long, they are claiming $300,000 in pain and suffering, loss of earning ability, legal fees, medical fees, etc. Its an insane amount, but jury's are so unpredictable and often think "the City has lots of money and insurance and this poor person needs help" and might just award him $1 million. So the City has to do the math. Either we fight for the next 6 years and risk having to pay 1 million or more, or we offer the person $250,000 just to end it all and remove the risk of a huge jury verdict and 6 years of spending our time and resources fighting it. In many cases I feel like the person is completely scaming the city, but for all the reasons just listed, we end up settling because of the math. Its an awful statement about our justice system. I suspect the same math was done on this case and so they settled. Grr.

@thecityman1910 I definitely get all of that, and of course it is always a cost analysis situation regardless of whether they are culpable or not. In this case, I think their family deserved the money, I will just say it, they murdered that guy. I just put out the surveillance, I guess you can judge for yourself. Keep in mind it is not illegal to open carry in Ohio, so he was not breaking any laws and had no idea the cops were coming... They gave him 2 seconds before they shot him... Tragic, really.

@8MC Investigations Just so you know, I didn't know anything about this case at all. So after seeing your comments I went and watched the videos and read more about it. I'm now in 100% complete agreement with you. I tend to usually be on the side of officers, but the way they just went in a shot him seems crazy. Not even sure why the DA cleared it as a good shoot. But the family certainly deserved a settlement. This is nothing like my example of a slip and fall scammer. This was wrong and a debt should have been paid at the absolute least. And btw....the 911 caller ought to be charged with something I feel!!! He called and said the man was walking around "pointing the gun at people" which clearly was a lie. Later on the same guy gave an interview saying "well, its not like he was pointing the gun at anyway, he was just carrying it by the stock and it was facing the floor". Grrrrr!

I try to remain neutral on a lot of these cases, but I just can't sometimes... You saw the same things that I saw. Sgt. Darkow barely got "put the gun down" out of his mouth before officer Williams took those 2 shots. Tragic.

I believe we don't have as many psycho serial killers these days because psychopaths realized they can just become a cop and kill people with no fear of consequences and get praised for it. I don't care who you are, no one takes a life and can be soo nonchalant about it unless your a psychopath. That would haunt me, even if it truly was life or death and I had to do it. To him he talks like it's normal. I'm only 30 minutes in and can tell he's a psychopath.

Just another reason I no longer blindly trust law enforcement!! After the BS in Uvalde and how officers no longer have a duty to protect and serve our communities but are mandated to enforce the law. Oh and for the countless murders committed by those in blue specifically on adolescent black males. Our government is broken from the top to the bottom. My family of once proud citizens whom most served in the armed forces hang our heads in shame. It can get better folks if we can stand untied and not let those with the power to continue to divide us by planting shit in the media with the soul intention of causing hate between republicans & democrats to keep both parties from seeing the injustice happening in DC.... If you're crazy enough to be in a Walmart with a rifle of any type in your hands, not in the sporting goods area but in the pet department, for an extended period of time and police arrive and command you to "drop your weapon" it's best to do just that- immediately- or you will risk being shot. That is the way it works.

I never did hear the outcome of the lawsuit. But at the time when it happened I remember seeing this on the news, and remembering DAMN! That damn officer didn't wait for shit to figure what's going on. Back of my mind I'm thinking somebody got scared, dialed 911, and made a mountain out of a mole hill, and this guys death was the result of it! AND the officer will get away with it, and the 911 caller will face no prosecution or causing a man to get his life ended by proxy of the cops. That's not right!

But they do training everyday on the Job. An estitician isn't under the diverse situations police are in from a day to day, hour to hour.... same as Paramedic, firefighters and teachers in complex situations so it's an unfair comparison.
What it we had no police officers or even half the police officers not taking the job due to only 3-6 months of training? Then you personally have an emergency and no one is available but 1 officer who just yesterday finished his 3 month training? He comes to your plead for help risking his own life- possibly.... would you tell him to leave because he doesn't have 5 years training?
We can't put all police officers in one lump sum either it's ignorant.
The young man who gave false information to the police and had a huge part in this precious young man's death should be charged also, according to our laws.
I respect our men in Blue and we all should be praying for them.
This officer was given false information and I hope this was taken into consideration when charging him.
Sad situation that could have had a completely different and positive outcome if the Walmart employee had 3-6 months of training in crisis situations!
No gun was pointed at children or loaded.

When you are arriving to a location where you've been I formed that there is an armed individual pointing a weapon at innocent people I am sure the adrenaline is unfathomable unless you yourself have experienced this type of situation. Training is extremely important and I do believe all officers need hand to hand combat training. I believe this would help ensure that the lethal option is most definitely the last option. I also believe, however, that it is impossible to train a possible life or death situation. Only experience warrants that.

Sometimes it is easy in hindsight to say the officer should have waited. The next two seconds could mean life and death to himself and bystanders. You don't know what it is like to be in that situation when you have to act and act decisively. I would have taken the shot myself.
It is an armed perpetrator and certainly not a store security personnel.

Did anyone else hear the investigator say (without outright saying what I think I heard "between the lines.") when he said, "Why didn't you shoot a second time?) (Why didn't you kill him?)

And that is one of the reasons why there is such conflict between police and publice...Cops aren't trained let alone educated on the law like every single office between police and and the Constitution - the SUPREME Law of the Land and the Supreme Court to adjudicate a mattter if need be, and 6 months of training (which I heard recently that in somee places it's been reduced to 3 since they are so desperate to get ffeet on the streets), and so the average Joe (or Jane) may very well be more educaated on some of the legal mumbo jumbo because they do do the research. You'd think the cops would get some just as a matter of courae.

If the interrogator was really interested in capturing everything the police officer was saying, he'd have been furiously taking notes. The officer was talking a lot, giving extraneous details but the interrogator was only sparsely writing.

@Walter Hresent Bc videos tend to get "lost" and every detective simultaneously take notes especially when recording. Its part of the process. Just like taking notes in class even though all the material is straight from the textbook. Notes are taken even though a recording is being made. Keep watching police "interrogations" to see it's how things are done. Its done with diagrams and even acting out the crime.

I'm boiling over and I'm only a few minutes in. There was no warning, no identifying of police. They shot first and when the guy was DOWN and NOT MOVING the caller said , 'Oh he's running away!' something along those lines. At that point the 'suspect' was lying on the ground, unmoving.

Description black male, six foot blue shirt, blue pants, HOLDING a gun. He's the one suggesting the man pointing the gun. Dispatcher said he was waiving the gun around, loading and unloading the rifle. The dead man would not have pointed the gun at two police officers armed with AR-15 rifles. According to the investigator, he never had the "rifle" more than 45 degrees and was mostly at 35 degrees. This is not a justifiable shooting rather it was murder of a man. Because it was a pellet gun, he could not possible have been loading and unloading as described. He was likely not waving it around either or pointing it at people especially bc he was on his cell phone.

Surveillance shows that he did not do any of those things... He WAS "swinging" the gun around, but swinging a bb gun around and WAIVING a gun around are certainly two completely different things. The caller used a lot of buzz words and lies that fed the officers false information, they were scared coming around that corner, and that is the result of fear.

To be fair, the caller threw weasel words in ("I think", "it looks like", &c.), that make it almost impossible to prove he actually lied. But of course, that's an old, old dodge that bullies are well aware of. That makes the question of 'sincere but mistaken' vs. 'overembellishing drama queen' vs. 'racist troll deliberately winding things up' a lot more difficult.

Please, even if you're law enforcement...actually, especially if you are law enforcement do not say more than you are required to say. Keeping it brief with yes and no is not a sign that you think you may be guilty, or people may think you are guilty, it's the other way around.

The over explaining and personal notes suggests you're hiding something.

Lesson learned, the hard way(wrong way), do not be walking around swinging a gun of any sorts, anywhere, and at any time or you may be shot.
Trigger happy cop will take you down. They shoot to kill.
Training should never end. Cops, dispatchers, surveillance dudes, etc. Keep educating your employees!
This all could have been prevented on 4 different occasions by 4 different people if just one of them were trained properly.

Now see, I am not some super constitutionalist or anything, 2nd amendment... Whatever, if the govt comes for you, gun or not, you getting taken or killed. BUT, what I DON'T like, is that when there are LAWS in place, those laws should be respected by EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY the police.
What Mr. Crawford was doing was not smart, but NOT ILLEGAL... He was not threatening anyone, or pointing the gun at anyone, he was on the phone, the WHOLE time... Those cops wouldn't even have written him a ticket had they waited more than 2 seconds to blow his chest out and actually do their job and figure out what is going on. As much as people do not want to believe it, it is not a cops JOB to shoot people...

We put the footage of the incident up, we did not put ALL of the footage up because it seemed rather irrelevant. I should note that at no point in time did Mr. Crawford aim that pellet gun at anyone, or even acknowledge another person in the store. He was on the phone the entire time.

But the cop is outright lying, it's clear from the footage that as soon as he saw the victim he immediately shot him dead.

Unless the guns pointing directly at an officer that and a person's already disabled why do they keep shooting? I always wondered why they didn't disabled somebody by shooting them in the leg or arm first when they're not sure there's a threat unless he's pointing a gun directly at an officer or person.

Shoot to kill is the training... I understand it to an extent, there are plenty of times where they "disable" someone and end up getting shot anyway. If you see the video, Mr. Crawford's (you cant tell in the video) arm was practically blown apart, but he was still able to get up and run a bit... If he was a REAL criminal, he was still capable of being a threat.

That being said, before the shooting starts, they should have assessed the situation a little more, I think nobody would have died in that situation.

I mean, if sneaking up on someone who has their back to you and is on the phone makes you fear for your life... Maybe a desk job is better suited. Running up on someone screaming unintelligible "commands" and then shooting them when they flinch is justified... I guess ordering your groceries for delivery, and buying everything on Amazon and never leaving your house is a viable option to stay alive.

Regardless of the false call, the guy with the gun, just had to drop it when he was told. Everything could have gotten sorted out afterward. He chose instead to not drop the weapon like he was told to do more than once and ended up paying a costly price. I think this officer responded appropriately. Given the situation, the officer thought about everyone in the store, his partner and himself. If he chose to not shoot and the guy ended up having a real rifle and the officers or other people had gotten hurt or killed then everyone would still blame him for not doing his job and letting a multitude of people get hurt. Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Kuddos to this officer.

First, I live in the area where this happened. Some of the public and media's reactions were horrible. Second, these pellet rifles and pistols are very realistic looking. The fault here lies with the person running around a store with a rifle. If he set it down, he doesn't get shot. It is not illegal to have a rifle in Ohio or to open carry it. Not that I would advise someone to do so for many reasons. But if you happen to do so, then you must follow commands of the officer. Which is an issue in most of these types of shootings. I conceal carry daily, not open carry. One reason I conceal is I don't want to cause alarm to anyone. The second reason is no one knows I have it and that gives me a tactical advantage in a life saving moment. Not following police commands with a real or fake gun is only going to end up one way. I do not understand what has happened with some of society where they think it is okay to not follow commands. I know i was taught that at an early age. The entire incident is unfortunate, but to blame the police is a travesty. Officers are trained to charge the potential active shooter scene, at risk to their lives. These officers did their job, especially if you compare them to the officer in the school shooting in Texas. Travesty.

In all fairness, I have seen the surveillance and I will post that soon... Sgt. Darkow didn't get a full "Drop the weapon" out of his mouth before Officer Williams unloaded 2 shots... This guy was completely unaware that he was causing any problem at all, so for him to react in any other way seems unfair. He had 2 seconds for his brain to figure out what was happening before he was fatally shot...

The officers had the element of surprise, they did not even attempt observe him for more than 2 seconds to see what was going on before shooting... There is a reason the city settled with the Crawford family for $1.7 million...

I know there will be people on both sides on this one, but that is what I have seen and read... They did not give that man the opportunity to drop his bb gun. Do you honestly believe he would have tried to act like it was real and aim it at them? I mean, cmon now.

Cop -- well you see sir when I saw the suspect I observed him holding a can of vegetables. Then I used my spidey sense and realized what he was holding was a can of spinach and from what I know about spinach if he was to eat it he would of been unstoppable so therefore I eliminated the threat with extreme prejudice.

Nevada is an open carry state, it's not abnormal to see people strapped at the Walmart. Myself included. I don't know what this young man was doing before he got to the pet department, what security saw?
What I saw was a person slinging around a long gun, Walmart in not the ROTC training grounds.
What this young man was doing is extremely careless and could be dangerous.
Had I observed that behavior Myself I would have wondered what on earth he was up to. Unfortunately you have to wait until he starts shooting. Maybe he had no intention? Maybe he did?

People must understand that the cops themselves can always (turn out to) be a lethal threat to anyone and that it is imperative to comply with their commands moving deliberately, without hesitation though without haste as well. Do not make sudden or unexpected moves, and don't make moves outside of the field of visibility of the officer(s). Be careful and cautious. Oh, and in case of situations that see you inside the car, whether you are driving at that moment or standing still, keep your doors locked so that no carjacker or purse snatcher stands a chance!

You are on the phone and someone randomly yells in your area, never identifying themselves and not even getting the first command out of their mouth before shots are fired... I can't understand how anyone could find this to be a justified shooting.

It is a "neutral" agency that is conducting the interview, the shooting was considered justifiable, and the surveillance footage is linked in the description if you want to see what actually happened vs. what the officers said happened.

We have the video of the surveillance if you want to see how much time they gave him to even understand what was happening. They ambushed him, screamed SOMETHING, and when he flinched, they shot him. They did not announce themselves as police, and they barely got half of the command out of their mouths before 2 bullets were in him. I wrote a comment, nothing wrong, nothing bad, no use of faul language, it was long, because l really couldn’t understand why thing weren’t done, like removing people out the store, that people are walking the streets with rifles and guns on them. I couldn’t understand why they were letting people come in the store, why the security officers didn’t join, or remove people from the store, since the policeman was scared for the family and children, but no one was scared. No one was screaming, they let him in carrying, we know now was a pellet gun.
People are walking the streets with rifles and guns on them in store’s, l have seen men with these huge handguns around there waist’s, believing they are in the Wild, Wild West, but without a hoarse. Over 200 mass shootings in not even a year. Policeman who shot him wasn’t being honest. He hadn’t threatened any of the policemen, he just moved in a way that the policeman got frightened for his life, if this man wanted people to die that day, he would have done it a long time ago in that store. He had the time before the officers arrived. The policeman lied, wasn’t honest, he didn’t know about the video, until he answered the questions and it proved that he lied. It wasn’t the first time he had used his weapon. Some hame been policemen for 40 year’s and never had to shoot a person, l believe it was the second or third time in 6 year’s, he only had a Pellet gun, but kids have been shot with a Mobil in their hands. It was a brilliant interview, talked to him respectful and him the right questions
