Lucas & Steve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

End of the night
I put my jacket on, callin' a cab
Waitin' outside
You nearly passed me, but then you asked
If I had a light
I told a joke and we shared a smoke or five

I said I ain't got a plan
But we could hang out 'til the morning
'Cause I don't wanna leave you now

Let's take the long way home
Just a little more time alone
I don't ever wanna let you go
Let's take the long way home
Let's take the long way home
I'm not ready to be alone
I don't ever wanna let you go
Let's take the long way home

I took your hand
You said I moved a little too fast
So I gave it back
You said somebody had hurt you before
And it cut you real bad
But he don't deserve you, you're gonna learn
I'd never do that

I said I ain't got a plan
But we could hang out 'til the morning
'Cause I don't wanna lose you
I don't wanna lose you now

Let's take the long way home
Just a little more time alone
I don't ever wanna let you go
Let's take the long way home
Let's take the long way home
I'm not ready to be alone
I don't ever wanna let you go
Let's take the long way home

Let's take the long way home
Just a little more time alone
I don't ever wanna let you go
Let's take the long way home

Let's take the long way home

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Long Way Home" create an image of two strangers meeting at the end of the night outside a club. We see the singer putting on his jacket and calling a cab, with the prospect of heading back to an empty home. However, as he waits outside, his eye is caught by another partygoer who nearly passed him by, but stopped to ask for a light. This act of reaching out leads to them sharing a smoke "or five" and joking around.

As they begin to connect, the singer tells the stranger that he doesn't have a plan and suggests they hang out together for a while, hoping to extend the fleeting encounter. He doesn't want to lose the person just yet, and the idea of taking a long way home is proposed as they extend their time together. As they continue down this winding path, the singer takes the stranger's hand, only to have them pull away, stating they are moving too fast. However, the attraction between the two builds, and they agree to continue down the path together.

The lyrics are a poignant reminder of how unexpected connections can arise in the unlikeliest of places. It captures the excitement and uncertainty that comes from meeting someone new, while also acknowledging the fear of getting hurt. The idea of taking the long way home serves as a metaphor for their newfound interest in one another and how they want to experience everything the journey has to offer. It's an optimistic and romantic outlook that makes us believe in the possibilities of meeting someone new.
