Caruso
Luciano Pavarotti & Eric Clapton Lyrics

Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima
Confondono i pensieri
The lyrics of Luciano Pavarotti's song Caruso depict a man who stands on an old terrace in front of the Gulf of Sorrento, reflecting on his life. He watches the sea glittering and feels the strong wind blowing. The man embraces a girl who had been crying, clears his throat, and begins singing. He expresses his great love for her, explaining that it is now a bond that runs through his veins, and no longer just a simple feeling.
As he watches the lights glimmering in the sea, he recollects the nights he had spent in America. But when he realizes that the lights were only lamps and the white wake of a propeller, he is filled with pain which he channels into his music. He stands up from the piano but when he sees the moon emerging from a cloud, he realizes he is content and even sees beauty in death.
The man looks into the girl's eyes, green like the sea, and suddenly a tear falls from her eyes which makes him believe that he is drowning. He reiterates how much he loves her, and again how this love is now ingrained in his veins. The song then speaks of the power of opera, how it can transform mere fantasy, drama, and mimicry into reality. However, two true eyes staring at you can make everything seem small and insignificant compared to love.
Overall, the lyrics of the song Caruso speak of the triumphs and tribulations of life - the pain and love experienced through stormy nights and glittering seas, and a love so fierce that it becomes an innate part of one's being.

Never thought I would see Pavorotti and Clapton on stage together. This is an amazing and powerful performance.
@kendavies945
Agreed, shame the lyrics are such crap. They should have chosen a better song. That would have been so easy.

I agree 👍

@Ken Davies I don’t know why you and Patsy Tate (who gave your comment a 👍 a month ago) think the lyrics are such ‘crap’?! I, and many others, think they are beautiful, as well as the performance! I believe (and hope others agree with me) that you are the minority of listeners with YOUR crappy viewpoint, and I can only say you don’t deserve to even listen or comment on it!

@Ken Davies I wrote a comment about yours about 1 1/2 weeks ago, but I want to add one more. It doesn’t matter what religion you are - you could be an atheist or agnostic for that matter. The lyrics are beautiful, and just bc it’s called and makes reference to the ‘Holy Mother’, shouldn’t cause you to be biased - their meaning has such depth. What kind of person are you and the others who share your thoughts about this song’s words make you feel like you do? Have you no belief in anything?! If that’s the case, I don’t feel sorry for you - instead I pity you for being so shallow.

Thank you! Your choir, added so much to this performance. Your choir sounded heavenly!!
@maryann7619
I don't know if you could see it, but Mr. Pavarotti was grinning like a schoolboy when the 3 of you (EC, him, and your choir) were singing together towards the end. Well done. 👏 👏 👏

Wonderful choir!
