Battisti started his career in 1966 and from 1969 to 1994 he released 18 albums in his home country. A significant part of his production was translated into Spanish (various albums) and English (one album). He was renowned to be an extremely reserved artist: during his successful career he performed only a small number of live concerts, and in the early 1980s he announced he would limit himself to his studio albums, completely disappearing from the Italian public scene.
Battisti died after long illness on September 9, 1998.
Era

Era bella oh era bella
Solo la sua età
Non ricordo se sorrise
Quando se ne andò
Io l’amavo io l’amavo solo questo so
Che non credo più
Non per questo sono triste
Ora ci sei tu
Ho ho ho paura ho paura
Quando penso che
Era era era era era come te
The song "Era" by Lucio Battisti talks about a past love that the singer had. The first stanza describes the time of year when the relationship took place - April, May, or perhaps a different time that the singer cannot remember for certain - and emphasizes the beauty of the woman he loved. Despite his uncertainty about her age, he remembers fondly how she looked.
In the second stanza, the singer reflects on the fact that he loved this woman deeply, and while he used to believe in many things related to their love, he no longer does. He doesn't specify what these beliefs were, but he seems to have moved on from them, and he's not sad about it. In fact, now there's someone new in his life - the person he's singing to - and he admits to being scared. This new person reminds him of his past love, and that brings up feelings of uncertainty and trepidation.

Un Battisti che aveva ascoltato Donovan e che ne aveva colto l'essenza malinconica, grazie anche a uno straordinario Mogol che sapeva sempre abbinare alle musiche di Lucio le parole perfette.
