Born David Debrandon Brown, Lucky Daye is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in a cult that forbade secular music, he nonetheless discovered an innate knack for singing. After his mother left the cult, Brown immersed himself in classic R&B and eventually fell particularly hard for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Rick James. Uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, he moved to Tyler, Texas, but soon relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music. He established himself as a songwriter and background vocalist, and across 2008 and 2009, landed credits on material by Keith Sweat (a handful of cuts on Just Me) and Ne-Yo ("She Got Her Own"). Brown wasn't as active the next few years — he did write for Boyz II Men ("Believe Us") — though he shifted gear during the latter half of the 2010s. During 2016 and 2017, he co-wrote songs released by Keke Palmer ("Enemiez"), Ella Mai ("10,000 Hours," "Down"), Trey Songz ("Song Goes Off"), and Mary J. Blige (including two tracks off Strength of a Woman), among other contemporary R&B artists. Signed as a recording artist to the RCA-supported Keep Cool label, Brown — by then living in Los Angeles — made his debut as Lucky Daye in 2018. First was "Little More Time," a Victoria Monet collaboration included on the soundtrack for Insecure's third season. Next came the single "Roll Some Mo," followed shortly thereafter by I, the song's parent EP. These six cuts, all written with and produced by D'Mile, prompted comparisons to Frank Ocean but also fell somewhere between comparatively soul-rooted progressives BJ the Chicago Kid and Daniel Caesar. ~ Andy Kellman

We swinging through walls from monkey bars
Yeah, yeah
My niggas say whoa, whoa
You're never get old, you know who you are (yeah, yeah)
Beauty can go, but glitter and gold
That's the road I'm gonna take you far (yeah, yeah)
Pimps and hoes and fancy cars
Let me
Get up my seat and move my body like a freak
A celebration just to be me and you
Can you feel it everywhere
The wind blowing through your good hair
And you can feel it when you step in the room
Ooh, ooh, ooh
I'ma pour a drink though I might drive (might drive)
Lemme put my waist on your baseline (baseline)
When you're outta doubt just to waste time
Hmm I just wanna make it to a late night
Maybe we can run through a backside (backside)
I'm just tryna make it to the air high (air high)
Do it one time for the one time
Let's take it to a late night
Beep, beep we got the keys to the streets
You got the keys to my sheets
Don't mind me
Think I'm playing for keeps
I see your body talking
What's it saying to me
Said you a hot topic no shade in your heat
I'm tryin' to get into you
No waves in your sea oh
I feed it 'til you fire it up
I feed it 'til you fire-y go-o-o-o-o-o
Feel it in my seat and move my body like a freak
A celebration just to be me and you
Can you feel it everywhere
The wind blowing through your good hair
And you can feel it when you step in the room
Ooh, ooh, ooh
I'ma pour a drink though I might drive (might drive)
Lemme put my waist on your baseline (baseline)
When you're outta doubt just to waste time
I just wanna make it to a late night
Maybe we can run through a backside (backside)
I'm just tryna make it to the air high (air high)
Do it one time for the one time
Let's take it to a late night
Yeah, we arrange it around 10 and 4's
10 and 4's, 10 and 4's
Niggas and hoes, pimps and hoes
Boots and coats
Rolex's and diamond karats
Big things and big rings
I'ma pour a drink though I might drive (might drive)
Lemme put my waist on your baseline (baseline)
When you're outta doubt just to waste time
I just wanna make it to a late night (late night)
Maybe we can run through a backside (backside)
I'm just tryna make it to the air high (air high)
Do it one time for the one time
Let's take it to a late night
(Take it to a late night)
In "Late Night," Lucky Daye sings about living life to the fullest and enjoying the moment with someone special. The opening lines refer to how the bigger one's ego is, the harder they will fall. He then mentions swinging through walls using monkey bars, which could symbolize the ups and downs of life. He then talks about how he and his friends will never get old because they know who they are. Daye sings that he wants to take the road of glitter and gold, which means living a lavish lifestyle full of material possessions. The rest of the chorus encourages the listener to feel alive, to dance, and to enjoy the wind in their hair, and to feel the electricity when they enter a room.
In the second verse, Daye sings about how he wants to make it to a late night, which means he wants to enjoy the company of someone he cares about long into the night. He wants to run through a backside, which could mean exploring new territories or enjoying things with the person he's with that he hasn't explored before. He mentions that he's just trying to make it to the air high, which could symbolize a life that is full of joy, freedom, and high-energy experiences. In the third verse, he mentions all of the things that can be enjoyed in life, such as boots, coats, Rolex's, and diamond karats.
Overall, "Late Night" is a song that encourages listeners to live in the moment, to have fun, and to celebrate life with a special someone.
