Despite recording only in Spanish, he continued to be the best selling Latin artist in the 1990s, and was credited for popularizing the bolero genre into the mainstream market. He has sold around 60 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling Latin music artists.
Latin pop music, along with his personal life and showmanship on stage, has made Luis Miguel popular for nearly his entire career, which started in Mexico in 1982. Having won his first Grammy Award at the age of fourteen for his duet "Me Gustas Tal Como Eres" with Sheena Easton, he is the youngest male artist in music history to have received this accolade. In 1991, the RIAA recognized the high sales for his 1991 album Romance, itself being the third best-selling music album in Mexico, and one of the best-selling Spanish language albums of all time. He was the first Latin artist to have been awarded two Platinum certified Spanish-language albums in the United States with ‘‘Romance’’ and ‘‘Segundo Romance’’ the latter earning him 35 platinum records throughout Central and South America. He is also recognized by Billboard, as the artist with the most top 10 hits on the Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart. His album Complices was released in 2008 and peaked at No.10 on the Billboard 200; it is the highest position a fully Spanish composed album has reached. His most recent album ¡México Por Siempre! was released in 2017, and it earned him his second No. 1 on the Billboard Regional Mexican Albums and achieved double platinum status.
Luis Miguel is also known for his high-grossing live performances. He is the first-highest grossing Latin touring artist since Boxscore began tracking touring data in 1990, with a towering total of $278.5 million. With the Luis Miguel Tour, which took place in 2010, he visited 22 countries in North America, South America and Europe, where he performed in a three-year span with a total of 223 shows all over the world, making it the longest and highest-grossing tour ever made by a Latin artist. He also holds the record for the most consecutive presentations in the Auditorio Nacional (National Auditorium) with a total of 30 consecutive concerts as well as the record for the most presentations in the same venue with a total of 258 concerts.
La Mentira
Luis Miguel Lyrics

The lyrics of Luis Miguel's song "Mentira" depict a relationship that is full of misunderstandings and mixed feelings. The first stanza highlights the struggle to forget the scars and memories embedded in the soul even if certain words were said in the past. The singer asks their lover to remember that despite these wounds, they still love them. The second stanza suggests that the singer is just as capable of hurting their lover with their actions as their lover has hurt them with their words. However, the singer acknowledges that they will not force themselves on their lover, though their love for them is strong.
The third stanza changes the tone of the song quite suddenly. It begins by recognizing that the singer's stature in their lover's life is not significant enough for them to stay together. Another way to interpret this could be that their love is not strong enough to endure the hardships. The audience then receives a glimpse into the nature of the "pacto" (pact) between the two. In the minds of both individuals, there is an agreement that they will be together, and one of the partners has forgotten what they promised. Finally, the singer returns their lover's promise of adoration and reinforces that this pact is not one they have made with God.
The song is about lies and misunderstandings in a relationship that cause pain and tension. By highlighting that a pact exists between the two lovers, it leaves space for the audience to imagine the significance of the promise they have made. This pact almost seems like a contract. Whether this contract is a material one or just symbolic, it leaves both the partners with unfulfilled promises. The song's melody and slow-paced rhythm add to the emotional weight of the lyrics. The pace and Miguel's voice carry the sense of regret and sadness in the lyrics, leaving the audience feeling melancholic.

That you love me despite what you say
Pues llevamos en el alma cicatrices
Because we both carry scars in our soul
Imposibles de borrar
That cannot be erased
Se te olvida
You forget
Que hasta puedo hacerte mal si me decido
That I can hurt you if I choose to
Pues tu amor lo tengo muy comprometido
Because I have a lot invested in your love
Pero a fuerzas no será
But it won't be by force
Y hoy resulta
And today it turns out
Que no soy de la estatura de tu vida
That I am not on the same level as you
Y al dejarme casi, casi, se te olvida
And when you almost leave me, you forget
Que hay un pacto entre los dos
That there is an agreement between us
Por mi parte
On my part
Te devuelvo tu promesa de adorarme
I return your promise to love me
Ni siquiera sientas pena por dejarme
Don't even feel sorry for leaving me
Que ese pacto
Because that agreement
No es con Dios
Is not with God
