Jedi Mind Tricks
Lupe Fiasco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They tryin' to censor the influencer
Just makes me sicker, influenza, (yeah)
I'll abide by the censorship,
Soon as they ride I'll get back on my nigga shit,
Can't reverse [song lyrics reversed]
The boy-game Advanced, complete the genesis,
I've broke bread with societies menaces,
I've dedicated sentences to the dead, and said hold your heads to my niggas doin' sentences,
I send condolences to the victims but, threats two the witnesses, (Ugh)
On my path I was facing a paragraph, Myself,
So they sentiments is felt,
When you hate your own and discriminate of self,
In a cell gotta make your home, cause you might never make it home,
Suicide on your side might commit it with your belt,
Keep your pants on homie, (uh)
Streets are damn so lonely, like only,
A bunch of niggas won't help (nah),
That's the enemy of stealth,
Plus if they get caught how you gonna keep your heart fatigue,
The hustler's diet is the enemy of health, give you heart disease (uh),
Arteries hard but it's hard to leave the bread alone,
Aren't we hard headed, headed for harm, but don't threat it homes,
From the twist tied to the butt,
We be rippin' it up

Frm the horror to the cure, don't force the issue,
To you my niggas in the war, may the force be with you (like uh)

Overall Meaning

The first line of Lupe Fiasco's song Jedi Mind Tricks talks about how there is an attempt to censor the influence of certain individuals or groups. Lupe, however, finds this attempt to be detrimental, as it only makes him sicker, like the influenza. Although he will obey the censorship to some extent, once the people enforcing it have left, he will revert to his true self, embracing his identity as a black man. The line "Can't reverse [song lyrics reversed]" is a clever play on words, indicating that, just like a reversed song, his identity is not something that can be erased or undone.

The next few lines talk about the rapper's experiences with crime and the criminal justice system. He refers to himself as a "boy-game Advanced," meaning he has grown up quickly into a world where he has to navigate complex situations and systems. He has even broken bread with those who society deems as menaces. Lupe has used his music to highlight the plight of those who are incarcerated or have fallen victim to the system. However, he also acknowledges that there are people who are complicit in the crimes they commit – the "witnesses."

The final lines in the verse articulate the challenges faced by black men in society. Being black in America means facing scrutiny, discrimination, and, in many cases, pursuit by the law. Lupe explains how he feels trapped in a cell, with suicide and loneliness as constant companions. The streets are lonely and unforgiving, with a chorus of Black men too preoccupied with their own troubles to pay attention to others' plight. Ending on a hopeful note, he wishes his brothers in the struggle the strength to fight the good fight, with "May the force be with you" – a nod to the Star Wars franchise – serves as an encouragement to never back down in the face of adversity.

"Suicide on your side, might commit it with your belt
Keep your pants on homie" Lupe is just straight up a lyrical genius, goat lyricist. Giving great message while using wordplays, metaphors and other literary devices... yeah, Lupe's something else.
