Toy Story
Lyle Lovett & Randy Newman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you've got a friend in me
Yeah, you've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got troubles, and I've got 'em too
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you
We stick together and can see it through
'Cause you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me

Some other folks might be
A little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too, maybe
But none of them will ever love you
The way I do, it's me and you, boy
And as the years go by
Our friendship will never die
You're gonna see it's our destiny
You've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me

Overall Meaning

Lyle Lovett's song, You've Got a Friend in Me, is a beautiful tribute to friendship. The lyrics express the depth and warmth of the relationship between two friends who support each other, no matter what. The song begins with a reassuring message: "You've got a friend in me. When the road looks rough ahead and you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed, you just remember what your old pal said. Boy, you've got a friend in me." This verse establishes the idea that the singer is a reliable and dependable friend who will always be there for his friend through the hard times.

The song's second verse emphasizes the strong bond between the two friends, stating that while they both have troubles, they will stick together and support each other through anything. "Cause you've got a friend in me. You've got a friend in me. You've got troubles, and I've got 'em too. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you. We stick together and can see it through." This verse is a testament to the importance of having a friend who can sympathize with and support you because they understand your struggles.

The final verse is about the uniqueness of the friendship between the two friends. The singer acknowledges that other people may be more intelligent, physically stronger, or better looking, but none of that matters because the bond between the two friends is unbreakable. "Some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am, bigger and stronger too, maybe. But none of them will ever love you the way I do. It's me and you, boy. And as the years go by, our friendship will never die. You're gonna see, it's our destiny. You've got a friend in me." This verse highlights the idea that true friends accept and love each other unconditionally and that the depth of the friendship is not based on superficial qualities.

Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me

Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me

Cuando el camino se ve difícil
When the road looks rough ahead

Y eres millas y millas
And you're miles and miles

De tu agradable y cálida cama
From your nice warm bed

Solo recuerda lo que dijo tu viejo amigo
You just remember what your old pal said

Chico, tienes un amigo en mi
Boy, you've got a friend in me

Si, tienes un amigo en mi
Yeah, you've got a friend in me
Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me

Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me

Tienes problemas, yo también los tengo
You got troubles, I've got 'em too

No hay nada que yo no haría por ti
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you

Nos mantenemos unidos y lo vemos a través
We stick together and see it through

Porque tienes un amigo en mi
'Cause you've got a friend in me

Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me
Algunas otras personas pueden estar
Some other folks might be

Un poco más inteligente que yo
A little bit smarter than I am

Mas grande y mas fuerte tambien
Bigger and stronger too

Quizás
Maybe

Pero ninguno de ellos te amará jamás
But none of them will ever love you

La forma en que hago
The way I do

Somos tu y yo, chico
It's me and you, boy
Y a medida que pasan los años
And as the years go by

Nuestra amistad nunca morirá
Our friendship will never die

Vas a ver que es nuestro destino
You're gonna see it's our destiny

Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me

Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me

Tienes un amigo en mi
You've got a friend in me

Long time ago, my son was about 3 years old, and he was watching the Toy Story movie on VHS tape about 6 times a day; a video of Lyle Lovett and Randy Newman singing this song was included at the end. We got in an elevator at the Houston Airport and a skinny guy dressed in black was the only person in the back of the elevator. I was talking to my wife and suddenly my son pulled my pants and with his head "pointed" at the guy. I tried to avoid looking at the guy, but my son insisted and I just recognized Lyle Lovett, who with his half smile was pretending that he didn't notice my son. My son didn't stop looking at him for the 3 or 4 floors ride and when Mr. Lovett was exiting the elevator, he looked at my son and just said: " You've got a friend in me". Fifteen years later, my son got tickets to watch him perform at the Texas A&M Auditorium; he never forgot that elevator moment.y

So cool!

@Joe_J-MT_Boy

I have only seen Mr. Lovett and his band twice - once at an indoor performance theater with Francine Reed beltin' it out across the stage from Lyle... and outdoors at the initial weekend of concerts of the Red Ants Pants Festival in White Sulphur Springs, MT. Both times he was extremely gracious with audience and highly respectful of his bandmates. I think he's been this way ever since he started recording and having a public profile. He sure seems like the genuine article to me.

This story of the little boy and Lyle in the elevator and how Lyle handled it speaks volumes to the man's character. I liked Lyle Lovett before... but I like him a little bit more after reading this comment.
