Fool Me
Lynn Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ain't it kinda funny they say a fool never learns play with fire and it always burns
Don't it kinda get you down you treat me worse than before
But I keep comin' back for more
'Cause you're a deceiver and I'm a believer it's just a game I know
But I can't seem to let go
So fool me fool me one more time you can fake just for old time's sake
Look in my eyes tell me those lies and just fool me fool me one more time
Don't it make you wonder why I keep playing make believe
Do you really think I'm that naive
Don't it make you sad I'm actin' like I got it made even though it's just a masquerade
'Cause you're a deceiver and I'm a believer it's just a game I know

But I can't seem to let go
So fool me fool me one more time...
Fool me fool me one more time...

Come on fool me one more time fool me one more time
Honey fool me one more time fool me one more time

Overall Meaning

In Lynn Anderson's song "Fool Me", the lyrics describe the feelings of someone who knows that they are being deceived by their partner. The song touches on the idea that despite knowing that their partner is untrustworthy and has hurt them before, they still come back for more in the hopes that things will change or that they will be able to overlook their partner's flaws.

The lyrics "Ain't it kinda funny they say a fool never learns play with fire and it always burns" alludes to the idea that the singer knows they are making a mistake by continuing to be with their partner, but they cannot help themselves. This is reinforced in the line "But I can't seem to let go".

The chorus further illustrates this point with the repeated phrase "fool me one more time". The singer is essentially asking their partner to keep deceiving them because they are more comfortable with the lies and the deception than they are with the idea of being alone.

In conclusion, the lyrics of "Fool Me" are a poignant representation of the human experience of dealing with a deceitful partner. It is a song about the struggle to let go of a love that has turned sour, and the desire to continue to be deceived rather than facing the harsh reality of the situation.

On this day in 1972 {May 2nd} Lynn Anderson appeared as a guest on the Philadelphia-based syndicated television program 'The Mike Douglas Show'...
Nowhere on the internet can I find it she performed a song on the show; but during the calendar year of 1972 she had three huge hits on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart; "Cry" {at #3}, "Listen to a Country Song" {at #4}, and "Fool Me" {at #4}...
Between 1966 and 1991 she had sixty records on the Hot Country Singles chart; seventeen made the Top 10 with five* reaching #1; "Rose Garden" {1970}, "You're My Man" {1971}, "How Can I Unlove You" {1971}, "Keep Me In Mind" {1973}, and "What A Man My Man Is" {1974}...
Lynn Rene Anderson passed away at the young age of 67 on July 30th, 2015...
May she R.I.P.
* She just missed having a sixth #1 record when "That's A No No" peaked at #2 in 1969...

Came along at the same time as some of the best women country singers. Loretta, Patsy, Dolly, Kitty, Wanda, and Tammy. Some of the best songs for any generation from these ladies.

Back when music was, well, music!

I always thought it was strange that this song did not make it onto her very premature "Greatest Hits" album from 1972, which featured at least three tracks that were not released as singles but were just album filler. "Fool Me" had been on the "Listen To A Country Song" album but did make it onto the "Greatest Hits" album while "Listen To A Country Song" did....what an oversight on Columbia's part! "Fool Me" was one of Anderson's hits that she rarely performed live for whatever reason even though it had been a hit with heavy radio play at the time. I still feel that "Fool Me" was one of her best songs after "Rose Garden".
