Four Walls Of Raiford
Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well them four walls of Raiford, closing in on me
Doin' three to five hard labor, for armed robbery
I had two years behind me, but I could not wait the time
Everytime I thought about it, well I died some more inside

And I had stripes on my back, memories that hurt
For the only time I seen sunshine is when I hit the dirt
Diggin' ditches for the chain gang, sleepin' in the cold
Oh Lord please forgive me for I could not wait no more

[Chorus]
And I'm comin' home to see you Jesus
Well it feels so close this time
Please take mercy on this soldier
From the Florida-Georgia line

When they find me they must kill me
Oh Jesus save my soul
I can't go back down to Raiford
I can't take that anymore

Well these last few years behind me
Oh Lord, have been so sad
I fought proudly for my country when the times were bad
Now they say I'm guilty, when they find me I must die
Only me and Jesus know that I never stole a dime

[Chorus]

Well when Vietnam was over there was no work here for me
I had a pretty wife awaitin and two kids I had to feed
Well I'm one of America's heroes and when they shoot me down
Won't you fly old Glory proudly, put my medals in the ground

And I'm comin' home to see you Jesus
Well it feels so close this time
Please take mercy on this soldier
From the Florida-Georgia line

When they find me they must kill me
Oh Jesus save my soul

I can't go back down to Raiford
I can't take that anymore

Overall Meaning

Lynyrd Skynyrd's song "Four Walls of Raiford" is a story of a man who is confined to a prison cell in Raiford, Florida, serving time for his offense of armed robbery. The song's narrator has been in Raiford for two years already, and the thought of going through three more years of hard labor is unbearable. Memories of his past, regrets, and pain of the present are the only things he has left. He says he would rather die than wait out his time, accepting the guilty verdict and the sentence that has been handed to him. He appeals to Jesus for mercy and forgiveness while acknowledging that he will never again escape the confines of the prison here on earth.

He recalls his time in the chain gang, where he dug ditches and worked under the sun, only ever seeing it again when he fell to the ground. He wears the stripes of a prisoner and can't help but recall those memories, which hurt his soul. The singer remembers how he fought proudly for his country when America was going through tough times, receiving due respect; he finds it saddening that this is how he will be remembered now.

This song is a reflection of the overall impact prison life and the justice system can have on an individual. The song shows how confinement, loss of freedom, and the long wait can lead someone to become so desperate that they would rather die than endure the harsh conditions for any longer.

3rd Verse:
Well them four walls of Raiford,
They ain’t never catching me,
In the swamps of Osceola,
That’s where I’m running free,

I can hear the hounds behind me,
And I ain’t scared no more,
Only two or three more gunshots,
Then I’m right at heaven’s door...

Now I’m home and with you Jesus,
Lord I’m right by you this time,
God have mercy on the soldier,
From the Charlton County line,

Well they found and they killed me,
Oh Jesus save my soul,
Cause I ain’t going back to Raiford,
I won’t take it anymore...

@craigbenz4835

It certainly makes me forgive them for enabling the rest of the world to inflict Free Bird on us for all these years.

You probably have the blues in you. I'm a southern guy and blues is in my soul to it's core, every cell in my body. It's a mixture of Christian gospel, black culture during and after slavery, and poor southern white music all mixed into one of the truest forms of art ever made. I love Chicago blues but the old southern blues is something so unique that it could've only came from that time and place. I collect extremely rare recordings of blues music from the 30s and 40s on shellac records (the really old records that shatter like glass, before plastic was invented). Some of this stuff is so rare, it's like listening to history. I have stuff that has basically no info online about other than "it exists". Think about the blues players who died and took with them all the songs they learned from passing down songs down the generations. Then we lost those songs.
