One Life
M.A.T. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I didn't choose the thug life yet I'm continually subjected to its whims
And I can never win
Because I don't want to win
I didn't choose the thug life yet I'm continually subjected to its whims
And I can never win
Because I don't want to win
When I was young a bunch of other boys surrounded me on bikes
So I tried to punch one of them but I felt bad halfway through
And ended up just pressing his face as he recoiled in weird annoyance
And later on I bought him food to say sorry
Throwing punches
Buying lunches
I get my kicks from doing bad things
As long as no one actually gets kicked
I didn't choose the thug life yet I'm continually subjected to its whims
And I can never win
Because I don't want to win
There was another boy at school called Chris Rose
Yeah, you, Chris Rose
Who called me a shite and a half
So what did I do?
I'll tell you
I tracked him down on Facebook to say I had over 2000 followers on Twitter
And that I was at worst only one fully formed shite
Throwing punches
Buying lunches
I get my kicks from doing bad things
As long as no one actually gets kicked
Provided I don't feel terrible afterwards
I didn't choose the thug life yet I'm continually subjected to its whims
And I can never win
Because I don't want to win
I didn't choose the thug life yet I'm continually subjected to its whims

And I can never win
Because I don't want to win

Overall Meaning

In the song "One Life" by M.A.T., the lyrics reflect the artist's experiences and feelings of being trapped or influenced by a "thug life" mentality, even though he did not actively choose that path. The first paragraph suggests that he feels constantly subjected to the unpredictable and often negative consequences associated with this lifestyle, ultimately leading to a sense of defeat.

The second paragraph introduces a childhood memory where the artist found himself in a confrontation with other boys. Initially trying to fight back, he experiences remorse and ends up trying to make amends by buying the person he accidentally hurt some food. This could imply that the artist feels conflicted about engaging in violent or harmful behavior, and instead finds a sense of satisfaction in being able to correct or apologize for his actions.

The third paragraph describes another encounter with someone called Chris Rose, who insults the artist. Instead of physically retaliating, the artist chooses to assert his own worth by highlighting his social media following. This displays a different approach to conflict resolution, relying on non-violent means of asserting power or gaining validation.

The recurring refrain of "Throwing punches, buying lunches" suggests a pattern in the artist's life where he seeks a sense of fulfillment from engaging in somewhat rebellious or deviant behavior. However, it is important to note that the artist stresses that no one should actually get hurt in the process. This further emphasizes the internal conflict he experiences, as he finds solace in pushing boundaries without causing permanent harm.

In the final paragraph, the artist reiterates that he never chose this "thug life" mentality and acknowledges the ongoing struggles he faces as a result. Though he may never feel like he can truly win or achieve success in this context, he also expresses that winning is not his goal. Instead, he seems to desire a sense of understanding and acceptance for who he is, free from the constraints and expectations of a "thug life" that he did not willingly embrace.

Sometimes I lay under the moon
And thank God I'm breathin'
Then I pray, "Don't take me soon
'Cause I am here for a reason"
Sometimes in my tears I drown
But I never let it get me down
So when negativity surrounds
I know someday, it'll all turn around because
All my life, I've been waitin' for
I've been prayin' for, for the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
There'll be no more wars, and our children will play
One day (one day), one day (one day)
One day (oh-oh-oh)
One day (one day), one day (one day)
One day (oh-oh-oh)
It's not about win or lose
'Cause we all lose when they feed on the souls of the innocent
Blood-drenched pavement
Keep on movin' though the waters stay ragin'
In this maze, you can lose your way, your way
It might drive you crazy
But don't let it faze you, no way, no way
Sometimes in my tears I drown (I drown)
But I never let it get me down (get me down)
So when negativity surrounds (surrounds)
I know someday, it'll all turn around because
All my life, I've been waitin' for (waitin' for)
I've been prayin' for (prayin' for), for the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more (fight no more)
There'll be no more wars (no more wars), and our children will play
One day (one day), one day (one day)
One day (oh, oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, one day)
One day (one day), one day (one day)
One day (oh-oh-oh)
One day, this all will change, treat people the same
Stop with the violence, down with the hate
One day, we'll all be free and proud to be
Under the same sun, singin' songs of freedom like
Wah-yo (one day, one day), wah-yo, oh, oh (oh-oh-oh)
Wah-yo (one day, one day), wah-yo, oh, oh (oh-oh-oh)
All my life, I've been waitin' for
I've been prayin' for, for the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
There'll be no more wars, and our children will play
One day (one day), one day (one day)
One day (oh-oh-oh)
One day (one day), one day (one day)

One day, one day, one day
