2010
M.E. Grant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

One friend found Jesus
The other found God
One friend found himself at the end of the rope
But couldn't tie the knot
One friend makes money
The other self-employed
One friend wears black jeans with a tie
And always acts annoyed
Only in 2010
Life could never end
I wanna be
Always seventeen
One friend got married
The other sits at home
One friend wears makeup with a wig
And likes to be alone
One friend makes movies
The other sleeps with whores
One reads the good book at night
Then knocks on doors
Only in 2010
Life could never end
I wanna be
Always seventeen
Only in 2010
Life could never end
I wanna be
Always seventeen
All these friends I knew
Never got to prove

If I had my way
I'd change my name and move

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of M.E. Grant's song "2010" depict the diverse paths that different individuals take in life, as well as the contrasting outcomes they face. The mention of one friend finding Jesus and the other finding God reflects the spiritual journeys people embark upon. The friend who "found himself at the end of the rope but couldn't tie the knot" explores the theme of struggling with difficult circumstances and feeling unable to overcome them. This line may suggest a sense of hopelessness or the inability to find a solution to one's problems, despite being at the brink.

The portrayal of one friend making money and the other being self-employed highlights the varying career choices and financial situations people find themselves in. The friend who wears black jeans with a tie and always acts annoyed presents a picture of someone who may be trying to maintain a professional facade but is perhaps internally struggling or dissatisfied. The repeated mention of being "always seventeen" conveys a longing for a past time of innocence and freedom, hinting at a desire to escape the complexities and challenges of adulthood.

The contrasting experiences of one friend getting married while the other remains isolated at home and one friend engaging in casual encounters while the other immerses in the world of filmmaking depict the diverse choices and lifestyles individuals lead. The friend who reads the good book at night and then goes knocking on doors suggests a blend of spirituality and a sense of duty or evangelism. The recurring line "Only in 2010, life could never end" along with the desire to be perpetually seventeen underscores a nostalgia for a particular era or phase in life, alongside a yearning for eternal youth and vitality.

The closing lines of the song express a sense of regret or missed opportunities, with the singer reflecting on the friends they knew who didn't get the chance to prove themselves. The desire to change one's name and move signifies a longing for a fresh start or a new beginning, perhaps driven by a wish to escape the limitations or disappointments of the past. Overall, the lyrics of "2010" by M.E. Grant paint a vivid picture of the complexities of life, the divergent paths people take, and the yearning for simpler times and endless possibilities.

Usually when a good man finds a good women and she becomes the mother of his children he don't usually chop her up even if they decide not to stay together.....

I have know Grant for almost 10 years , of seeing him sing and a great artist . It had to be a gift from God , His Talent , and he wasted it on Drugs ,and over living , he could never make it big due to his addictions , which he will Deny . Now his life is just about over, Remember, just because you have talent , Your not better than any body else .

He has some nice lows here not to nice on the highs. Most people who can make it big will make it big drugs or bo drugs. So I don't know if he has a lot of talent but if I had to guess I would say not much.

There isn’t much talent here, the chords and words repeat over and over again. And the arrogant laugh at the end - quite awful.
